It’s amazing how these Republicons are so willing to defend the victims of male privilege overseas, while doing NOTHING that would actually, you know, HELP them.
They’re so insanely blind to the fact that their very (in)actions towards the regimes and peoples who turn a blind eye towards “honor killings” are a major part of the problem they’re so eager to capitalize on back home. Even more insane is the idea that any of these foreign regimes will pay the slightest attention to their violations of women’s rights when the USA itself becomes the biggest violator of women’s rights by insisting that “Big Brother” has some legitimate reason to decide the outcome of a woman’s pregnancy or that poor women have no legal right to affordable care that might detect ovarian or breast cancers at local clinics that were shut down because they offered birth control at little-to-no cost or that a woman who needs birth control pills for other medical reasons shouldn’t have it covered as part of her health insurance while men can get their prescriptions for Viagra and Cialis filled with the insurance company picking up the majority of the cost.
And what’s really weird is how Ann Coulter recommends that women not be allowed to vote because they’re “too emotional” while not criticizing GOP women who insist on running for political office while not seeming to hold an idea in their head that a GOP man hadn’t first approved. (Of course, “weird” and “Ann Coulter” just go together like peanut butter and jelly or chicken and rice or flip flops and Mitt Romney.)

And on the matter of Catholics and marriage equality, I offer this piece from “The Advocate”:
At services last weekend, Father Richard T. Lawrence, pastor of St. Vincent de Paul Church, first read parishioners Baltimore archbishop William Loriâs letter urging them to vote against Question 6, which would affirm the marriage equality law passed by the Maryland legislature. But he followed that with his own thoughts on the subject, according to the National Catholic Reporter.
Lawrenceâs statements were a hit with parishioners, who gave him a standing ovation, notes the Reporter, and he subsequently posted the text on the parishâs website. However, Archbishop Lori was not pleased, and he asked Lawrence to remove the statements from the site, reports BuzzFeed. Lawrence did so.
(Full article can be read at www.advocate.com/politics/marriage-equality/2012/11/02/baltimore-catholic-priest-takes-risk-supporting-marriage )
Not surprisingly, the majority of comments are positive. Of course, since “The Advocate” decided to move its comments system to Facebook, any moron with a Facebook account can post a comment (ironically, the site went to Facebook-only comments so that people would be prevented from “hiding” behind a fake name; one of the most negative comments on this story comes from a poster using an obviously fake name—so much for “owning your comments”). And there have been a LOT of homophobic comments posted (IMO, far more than there used to be under the old commenting system; then, you had to actively seek out “The Advocate” to post your comment—now, of course, all you need is some anti-gay site referring to the story and sending their followers to “The Advocate” story and the site is hit by the trolls).

Let me see if I can follow O’Reilly’s line of thinking. (Let me know if I’m wrong.)
First off, affirmative action is wrong when it helps African-Americans. (Except when those African-Americans are die-hard dyed-in-the-wool conservative loons like Allen West, Herman Cain and Clarence Thomas. Bear in mind the only reason the last man got his current job was because he was replacing the great Thurgood Marshall.)
Then, if whites vote for an African-American Democrat, they’re just “liberals” voting out of “white guilt.” But if/when whites vote for an African-American Republicon, it’s “proof” that they’re not racists.
And finally, if an African-American Democrat says something that O’Reilly vehemently disagrees with, he’s to be pilloried on every occasion. But, if an African-American Republicon says something that O’Reilly vehemently disagrees with, he’s either pitied or he’s treated politely and it’s a case of “let’s agree to disagree.”

@vin lenco: You know what they say—“takes one to know one.” As to those “concerns,” FoxNoise is NOT the least bit interested in the concerns of the familty [sic] members; we, on this thread, HAVE acknowledged those concerns family members (most of whom, incidentally, have ignored FoxNoise’s “requests” for interviews)—if you’d been trolling here a couple of weeks ago, you would’ve read some of them. The simple reality (something that you wouldn’t recognize if it came up in front of you and forced its way down your throat like an Alien) of the matter is that FoxNoise spent YEARS covering up for all the crimes committed against Americans during the Bush/Cheney years. Do you remember how Bush and Cheney refused to testify before the 9/11 commission? I do. They would only agree to speak “off the record” as it were. (And you might remember that Dubya was presented with a briefing more than a month before 9/11 WARNING of an attack against US targets. What did Dubya do? NOTHING. How did FoxNoise cover that story? They didn’t.)
You might also remember that most of the loudmouths who are now raising the biggest fuss about “Benghazi-gate” were, when President Obama put the Libyan rebels under US protection, strenuously objecting to such aid. Not just the right-wing GOP politicians but also the blowhards at FoxNoise.
If you want to know what’s REALLY wrong with America, take a look in the mirror. It’s you right-wing conservaturds. A decade ago, the right-wing was applying the word “traitor” to ANYONE who objected to, or merely questioned, Dubya’s war policies. Of course, that was then, this is now. The right-wing has no problem objecting to Obama’s policies.
If a President McCain had been in charge when the consulate was attacked, and the GOP were still in charge of the House, there wouldn’t be a damn peep out of any of the GOPers and FoxNoise would be there 24/7 accusing “liberals” of being “traitors” for daring to question McCain’s policies. And if there’d been the slightest suggestion of a cover-up, FoxNoise and the GOP would call it nothing more than “liberal lies” to take down the President.
And if you were REALLY honest with yourself, you’d realize that I’m right. But you can’t be honest. You’ve swallowed too much bullshit from FoxNoise and the House GOPers who’ve been too trigger-happy to wait for ALL the facts before proceeding with their “investigations” (which, incidentally, revealed some secrets that should’ve been kept under wraps). All in the name of taking down Obama.
Vin lenco: America’s REAL problem.

It’s obvious that Patel is NOT a teacher.
OR, maybe Patel is. I’ve read about teachers who pass their pets who can barely string together a marginally coherent sentence while flunking the student with the incredibly insightful research paper who, unfortunately, had a single misspelling and inadvertently single-spaced a line when he should’ve double spaced and failed to keep the right margin perfectly straight.
(Then again, what passes for “researches every topic thoroughly & does homework before going on-air” at FoxNoise would only merit a passing grade in any high school English class if the teacher were being pressured by the football coach and the school administration worried that the school’s star player might not be playing in that week’s “Big Game.”)

@ mlp!: Joshie can say he voted for Obama in 2008 but he has NO tangible proof of actually having done so.
And, sorry Joshie, but given your obvious fixation (when you do NOTHING to show how upset you were during the Dubya era when THOUSANDS of Americans died without the least bit of sympathy or apology from that particular resident of the White House), your mere word is NOT good enough for me to believe your claim. It’s just too bad that the “secret ballot” is just that—secret. You can’t prove how you voted so we can call you a lying liar.

Fr. Morris claimed that Keller blamed the Catholic Church for our not being able, as a society, to “get to the point where our loved ones can die peacefully because the Catholic Church would never allow such practices to occur.” After Steve Doocy twice said “that’s not true,” Fr. Morris asserted that Keller claimed that the Catholic Church would force family members of the dying to “go to extreme means to keep somebody, who is dying, alive.”
-—
Not to mention, Priscilla, how the Church apparently has two faces on “life.” Per Father CutiePie’s words, the Church would not have any problem in allowing a family to decide about a family member’s “dying with dignity,” rather than “forcing” the dying person to live on in great suffering. Now, here’s the problem that I see with this absurdity: Abortion. Should the family not have as much right to determine whether a developing fetus should or should not be brought to term (especially in cases where a debillitating disease or condition—like a non-formed brain) as the Church supposedly is willing to give them when it comes to a dying (and presumably, elderly) member? By Father CutiePie’s own words, the Church is obviously placing greater value on a fetus (which may or may not survive to term—Mother Nature isn’t always a nice lady, but is frequently a real bitch) than a living person at the end of his/her life.
If the Church really wouldn’t force a family to go to extreme measure to keep a dying member alive, then—by the same token—the Church shouldn’t be too concerned with what a woman does with her reproductive system; it doesn’t matter if it’s been invaded by millions of sperm intent on fertilizing one of her eggs or one of those eggs has been fertilized and gets implanted or whether she decides to prevent that implantation or terminates that implant.

Well, I’m not really sure what “rising gas prices” are being spoken of since the gas prices in my area (Montgomery, AL) are currently running about 25 cents LESS than they were just 2 weeks ago.
I’d put (regular unleaded) gas in my car on Tuesday, 10/9, and the price was $3.599 per gallon. When I filled up at the same station on Sunday night, 10/21, the price per gallon was $3.399 per gallon. As I passed by the same gas station yesterday, the price per gallon was $3.329 per gallon. Even the little gas station near my apartment was over $3.60 a gallon back around the 9th and was under $3.40 a gallon yesterday (I don’t use this station because it sits on a bad corner, trafficwise). Even a gas station near my workplace is running about 20 cents a gallon less than it was just 2 weeks ago (and it averaged about 5 cents more than any other gas station on my usual driving pattern).
Now, I do remember a news story about a week and a half ago about how gas prices in Cali were set to go over $6 a gallon because of a refinery shortage or something but I’d think that would be something wholeheartedly supported by the FoxyFiends since it follows that old capitalism principle of “supply & demand” but doesn’t quite seem to cross the line into violating any laws against “price gouging” (here in Alabama—a bastion of conservative “fuck the consumer” ideology—we have laws that prohibit anything that looks like price gouging or price fixing during declared emergencies*; even when it looks like a group of businesses are pricing their products the same, despite the businesses may be miles apart and whose clientele’s incomes are completely dissimilar, our hard-right leaders will step in when constituents complain about possible price-fixing—the owners or operators of those businesses will be “asked” to explain why their prices seem to be so closely aligned, especially when there’s been some sort of natural disaster involved).
*Hotels, for instance, can’t suddenly increase their rates because there’s an influx of new “customers” evacuating areas under hurricane warnings and their available spaces are dwindling, and gas stations can’t jack up prices as their supply starts running low from hundreds of evacuees stopping in and filling up, and grocery stores can’t jack up prices as their “staple” items begin dwindling)

On another site where I’d read Trump’s “grand challenge,” I read an interesting point made in the comments that people have seemed to overlook in the Donald’s challenge: That he wants to see Obama’s “passport applications.” The commenter noted that when he’s filled out his “passport applications,” he’s then had to turn over the ORIGINALS to the Government (through the Post Office). And I realized then just how stupid the Donald really is. The commenter was right. If you keep your passport application, you can’t get a passport. You have to send in that application. Actually, you can’t really keep any application—you have to turn over the original to whatever group or company you’re applying to or for. You want a credit card? You fill out an application and turn it over to the bank or send it off to the issuer. You want a job? You fill out an application and turn it over to whoever’s in charge of hiring. You want to go to college? You fill out an application and send it to the college. You want a loan? You fill out an application and turn it over to the financing agency. Can you get any of those things if you keep the application? Not in any situation I know of.
Of course, as others have pointed out, this is all bluster on the Donald’s part. If he’d paid his “investigators” $5 million to find something, I’m sure they would’ve found something.

AAP: You forgot to point out to the Space Cowboy* about the guy who first pushed the fallacy of the “balanced budget” and HIS failure to EVER produce a balanced budget. That’s right. Pres Ronald “Balanced Budget Amendment” Reagan did not—in EIGHT YEARS—produce a single proposal for a balanced budget. Yet, he was constantly pushing for the Congress to not only send him a balanced budget but also deliver a Constitutional amendment requiring a balanced budget.
And NO ONE ever called him on his bullcrap or his hypocrisy.
*Space Cowboy, of course, is a reference to the Steve Miller song, “The Joker,” in which Miller sings “Some people call me the Space Cowboy, some call me the Gangster of Love, some people call me Maurice.” I thought the nickname was appropriate. (It’s not really fair to Miller, though, but the song is really pretty weak. Just as the earlier individual’s comment was.)

@(Not so) Clearsighted: You wrote, “This liberal fantasy that you can have Jeffersonian democracy spring up in a country which has never known democracy and in which the predominant religion considers democracy anathema and an insult to their god is delusional.”
Well guess what, buddy? Guess where this “liberal fantasy” actually did happen IN SPITE of there not being any real democracy and in which the area’s “predominant religion considered democracy anathema and an insult to their go?”
Give up? The US. You may not realize it, but before John Hancock and company set forth that little document called the “Declaration of Independence,” our country was a series of colonies controlled by England. We had NO representation in the British Parliament and all the colonial leaders took their orders from London, and King George. There’d been several years in which British troops were stationed in people’s homes—without their consent or approval; the King decreed it, and it was so.
As for the religious deal, you might want to read how—even AFTER the First Amendment declared the people had “freedom of religion”—the vast majority of American citizens were subject to religious beliefs to which they did not adhere (just because you were a “Christian” didn’t mean that your particular church believed all the same tenets that the STATE-approved church did; even your choice of Bibles was subject to what the State backed). But, prior to the Revolution, the simple fact is that “democracy” is TOTALLY anathema to “religion.” Plain and simple. The concepts on which democracy is founded rely on the inherent idea that (as the Declaration of Independence states) “all men are created equal.” Democracy mandates that leaders be selected from one’s peers—NOT “divinely selected.” Churches operate on the basis of hierarchy and failure to follow the rules results in shunning or expulsion from the community (even the Southern Baptists, which purport to believe that member churches are independent to follow the Bible as they see fit, actually demand loyalty of their members). Go back and read how the CHRISTIANS of the early New England colonies treated those who didn’t “conform” to the community’s standards. Why, those folks sound positively “savage” by today’s standards; you could almost confuse them with “Muslims.”
@mlp!: And this would affect a cage match between these two, how? I didn’t think cage matches had any rules.
I can’t see how either one would have any physical advantage over the other (neither one looks like they could punch their way through a wet paper bag*) and neither one would have to worry about suffering any additional brain damage (of course, you need to have a brain for it to be damaged).
*Of course, Malkin might have a slight advantage. Those little Filipina gals can get pretty brutal when they want to—and those are the gals who HAVE a conscience. Lacking such a potential hindrance, Malkin could easily take Coulter and wipe the floor with her (not that Coulter’s not used to being in that position—though Coulter usually prefers being in that position of its own volition). The only problem I could foresee is that Malkin would be frustrated when she tries to feast on Coulter’s beating heart—since Coulter doesn’t have one.

I’d love to explain to LaSaliva (misspelling intentional) that, for me at least, part of MY “economy” issues includes my NOT being fired by some homophobic bigot who uses his “deeply held religious beliefs” as a reason, especially when you have the misfortune of living in a “right to work” state. As long as the LGBT community doesn’t enjoy the same FEDERAL protections afforded to ethnicity, religious beliefs, political affiliations, even gender and marital status, LaSaliva can shove his support for Romney right up his own ass.
The only thing that all these “conservative” groups (whether GOProud or the dumbass Black conservatives) have in common is the “I got mine, fuck you” mentality. At least the Log Cabin Republicans are willing to fight for what best serves their COMMUNITY; GOProud is only interested in how much money they can rack up for themselves and their however many board members they have.

I’m not all that enthused about Stein’s politics, but I do admire the fact that he’s NOT intimidated, much less swayed, by the FoxFiends. He will admit when he’s wrong but you’d better have all your evidence lined up and it had better be bulletproof.
Of course, Stein got his political education the old-fashioned way: He began as a lawyer and speechwriter for Richard Nixon.

@Dennis: I don’t see you actually disagreeing with or contradicting anything Ellen wrote.
As for the “nitwit” comment, you do know the old saying about the pot and the kettle, right?
