Ironically, if it hadn’t been for Carter in the first place, the Republicons would never have captured all those evangelical Christian and Southern Baptist votes and wouldn’t have become so beholden to the Krazy Khristian Konclave as they have.

It was largely Falwell who led the conservative/evangelical movement into the Republicon Party because they felt that Carter had “abandoned” them. How dare Carter run as a devout Christian but do nothing to overturn abortion and denounce the burgeoning gay rights movement and not install a strict Christian morality on the entire country! Falwell saw Reagan as “his” kind of leader—the one who said all the right things—and held up Reagan as the man who would “save” the USA (of course, Falwell learned his lesson after Reagan repeatedly chose to put politics over religion when necessary, and made certain that his followers would take over the GOP to ensure that religion would trump* politics as often as possible).

*Honestly—there was no pun intended there. It just happened to be the word for the situation.
