Of all the right-wing attempts to exploit – and yes, race hustle – the police killing of unarmed teenager Michael Brown, Fox’s Todd Starnes has to take the cake. Starnes ridiculed President Obama’s statement calling Brown’s death “heartbreaking” and posted a series of race baiting tweets questioning why Obama didn’t offer condolences to the police officer (who, unlike Brown, didn’t die) or other white people. “I’m sensing a pattern,” Starnes tweeted. So are we, Todd.
In fact, Obama’s statement called for peaceful reactions to Brown’s death just as much as it expressed sorrow:
The death of Michael Brown is heartbreaking, and Michelle and I send our deepest condolences to his family and his community at this very difficult time. As Attorney General Holder has indicated, the Department of Justice is investigating the situation along with local officials, and they will continue to direct resources to the case as needed. I know the events of the past few days have prompted strong passions, but as details unfold, I urge everyone in Ferguson, Missouri, and across the country, to remember this young man through reflection and understanding. We should comfort each other and talk with one another in a way that heals, not in a way that wounds. Along with our prayers, that’s what Michael and his family, and our broader American community, deserve.
Despicably, Starnes ignored Obama's attempts at calming the inflamed tensions (though he surely would have made a big deal had Obama not done so) and seized on the words “heartbreaking” and “deepest condolences” in order to suggest Obama is prejudiced against white people. Instead of doing his part to keep the peace, Starnes deliberately tried to rouse racial antipathy in a series of tweets.

Why didn't Obama release a statement offering support to the business owners whose stores were looted?

“Police are now arresting and tear gassing reporters on the scene in Ferguson. They are also pointing military-style guns at unarmed civilians.”
