Todd Starnes: Michelle Obama 'Probably' Felt 'Entitled' To 'Upstage' Oscars

Posted by Ellen -7841.60pc on February 25, 2013 · Flag

Could there be anything more boorish and less ungracious - not to mention bigoted - than making a racially tinged tweet about First Lady Michelle Obama's appearance at the Oscars last night? But that's the kind of Christian spirit displayed by Fox's own Christianity crusader, Todd Starnes.

As you probably know, Michelle Obama made a surprise appearance at the Oscars last night to announce the award for Best Picture. "Christian-minded" Starnes responded with the tweet: Tonight was supposed to be about Hollywood - but Mrs. Obama made it about herself. #oscars

starnes_oscar_2_(really_first).png

That was loutish enough. But later, Starnes made it more racial and mean-spirited with this tweet: "Mrs. Obama probably felt like she was entitled to upstage the #Oscars

starnes_oscar_1.png

In the same spirit, FoxNation blared the headline, Michelle Obama Crashes The Oscars.

Not surprisingly, as Media Matters notes, Starnes is part of a general right-wing attack on Mrs. Obama's appearance. But Media Matters also points out that her appearance is far from unprecedented. First Lady Laura Bush, President Ronald Reagan and President Franklin Roosevelt all participated in Academy Awards ceremonies.

These people just can't stand it that our First Family is well-liked and part of our popular culture.

And Aria, I feel she was divisive as the White House and Weinstien knew how the Conservatives would react – that’s not bringing this country together but in my view being divisive.

That’s just rediculous. Did the Obama Administration not want any press pictures of the President’s golf “vacation” with Tiger Woods because he knew it would be “divisive” towards conservative media, OR, did he not provide access because he thought the pictures would be “divisive” when conservatives saw the pictures? He can’t win with the haters.

I think you can see my point as snarky as it is. The Rightwing conservatives will find any excuse to demonize the President, no matter how foolish or insignificant the perceived sleight.

Thx4 Fish nailed it. A Squit not so much.

@thx4 Fish. My thoughts exactly. Thank you.

A squit: when you find the mere appearance of the First Lady at a national event to be divisive, then I think there was never any chance to have a reasonable discussion anyway.

If Mitt would have won and this were his wife Ann, then I seriously doubt Starnes would be saying what he said here. Instead he and everyone at Fox Nation would talking about how lovely she looked.

This is nothing but a grade school mentality cheap shot, but it’s all they got.

From Antoinette’s post:

“The Dolby Theater does not allow animals inside, including jackasses.”

LMAO! Good one! Dear Antoinette: since you mentioned “jackasses”, I’d thought you’d might find this piece of trivia rather amusing: did you know that in Littleton, CO (a suburb south of Denver), slightly east of US-85, there is a street named “Jackass Hill Rd.” which leads to a local public park named “Jackass Hill Park”. I was thinking — since you want to put Todd Starnes in his place, how about we send him there?

:^)

A squit – why do you feel Michellle was being divisive simply because she knew how Conservatives would react? The mere fact that she and Barack occupy the White House is enough to make Conservatives overreact. Here was the First Lady making a plea for funding of arts education. I don’t see why that’s a reason for anybody to overreact. Don’t put the burden on her for the Right’s irrationality.

Fox News and Rush Limbaugh thought the Obamas smiling in public during the 2008 election was dividing the country. But nice try.

Let us put Todd Barnes in his place.

The little man is jealous because he wasn’t invited to the awards. The Dolby Theater does not allow animals inside, including jackasses.

You supposedly want mature discourse, A Squit, after YOU accuse me of reacting on what I “imagined” you wrote?! When I wasn’t even talking about anything YOU said? Bwaaah!

Well if they can’t complain about her right to speak, they would have to talk about her speech. That was brilliant. They couldn’t have that eh?

My comment is a simple fact: As far as controversy goes, Michelle’s appearance only ranks with political extremists who hate her. Everyone else focused on controversal comments from McFarlane, feud moments, questionable wins, and some of the fallout spats.

And how is her appearing as a presenter “divisive”?
d d commented 2013-02-25 21:14:51 -0500 · Flag
@a Squit – IF you are referring to my comment, I wasn’t paying any attention to what you had posted. I was addressing the fact that FoxNation used the word “crashes” in their totally misleading/deceptive headline despite the circumstances being known. As far as your accusation about reacting “only to what you imagine”, it looks like that’s what you just did. LOL!

Oh, for crying out loud – talk about Obama Derangement Syndrome! The FLOTUS did not freakin’ crash the Oscars and FOX “news”/PoxNation know this as foxnews.com has a story on their website about it (which, unsurprisingly, quotes Malkin’s tweet). Michelle was invited and the whole thing was arranged for by Harvey Weinstein, his daughter (it was her idea) and the Academy producers.

I found a link on my Facebook page today to a Michelle Malkin article article about the same subject. The hatred in the comments is just unbelievable! These people are sick, sick, sick!

It’s time for the Academy official(s) responsible for the invitation to step up and set the record straight. (Not that anything will convince the die hard haters. Even a direct revelation from God would be challenged as a Satanic deception.)
Aria Prescott commented 2013-02-25 15:34:03 -0500 · Flag
I’m surprised Fox News hasn’t begun a hatchet campaign trying to tie host Seth McFarlane’s casual hate speech disguised as jokes into this. Seriously, I saw a compilation clip of some of the jokes he’s under fire for, and personally? I want to slap him for the ones about abuse victims, right before I ask him if all those homophobic slams on Hugh Jackman were him admitting something.

He has become a better subject for a “See what the left supports?!” hit piece than even Bill Maher could ever dream, and their biggest target was a part of the show he did it on.

Then again, I’m reasonably sure that everyone at Fox News is still laughing at those comments, just because they were so viciously out of line. They’re probably afraid they couldn’t do it without exposing that they agree.
doors17 commented 2013-02-25 15:27:18 -0500 · Flag
As much as I disagreed with the politics of George W Bush, never once can I recall any attacks from the left against Laura Bush. Now I’m sure they were some, but nothing to the level of hate that the right is displaying against Mrs. Obama. Nancy Reagan took some hits because of her astrologer, Joan Quigley, but we never would have known about it unless Reagan’s former Secretary of the Treasury and Chief of Staff Donald Regan book, For the Record came out and his talking about with his disagreements with Mrs. Reagan.

Michelle Obama didn’t “crash” the Oscars. She was invited by the Academy to participate and she graciously accepted. Only in the cesspool of hate AKA The Fux Nation would a bunch of racist turds get agitated.
John Wallach commented 2013-02-25 14:52:21 -0500 · Flag
My understanding is that she was invited to participate. The Academy official responsible for the invitation needs to make that perfectly clear.

Leave it to Fox News to make a racially-tinged attack on Michelle Obama's appearance at the Oscars.
