Sean Hannity has been screaming about Islamic extremism taking over Egypt since before Mubarek was overthrown. Lately, he has been trying to exploit a dispute between Egypt and the U.S. over 16 detained Americans by calling it a “hostage crisis.” Unfortunately for Hannity and his Islamophobic fear mongering, John McCain set him straight in no uncertain terms Monday night (2/13/12).
First, McCain pointed out that those who are detaining the Americans are not Islamic extremists but the military and “vestiges” of the Mubarek regime.
But that didn’t stop Hannity from arguing that Sharia Law was about to take over Egypt.
“The Muslim Brotherhood is split… They have not obtained power yet,” McCain told Hannity. Noting that Israel is a Jewish state, McCain added, “Let’s wait and see and hope that we can guide them on a path to a country that is not ruled by a brutal dictator but has a democracy… I’m not saying it’s going to turn out right but I can tell you this: It was untenable, the situation Mubarek, the position he was in. It was a matter of time before he was leaving.”
Hannity – a phony friend to the Jews - argued but that Mubarek did keep peace with Israel.
McCain replied that Mubarek also “pummeled them regularly, stirred up anti-Israel sentiment within Egypt in order to enhance his power.”
“The question is, is which way is Egypt going to go now,” McCain summed up, “And do we gain anything by cutting off assistance to Egypt which has not by the way abrogated the treaty with Israel?”
Having clearly lost the argument on Egypt (although I can assure you that he will ignore everything McCain said in order to revert to his own talking points next time), Hannity turned to the subject of Iran.
Just a few days after “pro-life” Hannity promised to go to jail to prevent women from getting birth control covered by health insurance, he began salivating once again for war with Iran. “I think the war has already started,” he said and went on to attack Obama for “not stepping up to say we’ve got to join with Israel and take out these nuclear sites sooner than later.”
Sadly, on that point McCain wholeheartedly agreed.
John McCain wasn’t necessary. Any fifth-grader could’ve done that . . .
