FOX News must not be happy about the Confederate flag coming down in South Carolina, at least judging from the extremely scant coverage on the front page of FoxNews.com. In fact, you could easily get the impression the “fair and balanced” network was deliberately ignoring this historic event.
The removal of the flag yesterday was the end of an era. The New York Times described the occasion as, “The banishment of perhaps the most conspicuous and polarizing symbol of the Old South” and noted that it was “the culmination of decades of racially charged political skirmishes.”
CNN noted, “A crowd of hundreds erupted in cheers, and sang a farewell refrain more associated with sports arenas, as uniformed highway patrol officers lowered the flag from a pole next to a soldiers’ monument shortly after 10 a.m. ET Friday.”
At 10:42 AM, there was no mention of the flag removal on the homepage of FoxNews.com.
At 10:48 AM, there was a small “BREAKING NEWS” headline at the bottom right of the homepage that would not be seen on most screens unless you scrolled down.
At 11:34 AM, the FOXnews.com homepage had not changed. Compare the homepages of CNN.com and MSNBC.com:
What was more important on FOXnews.com, you ask?
The big headline was “TIME TO GO: OPM chief shrugs off increased calls for her resignation.”
The other three more important feature stories were:
- “HELPING HAND. Report: Woman wore wire to aid probe into Fogle”
- “OMAR SHARIF DIES. Egyptian-born star of ‘Doctor Zhivago’ was 83.”
- “FOUL-MOUTH MINIONS? McDonald’s Happy Meal toy may be cursing customers.”
Fox News priorities.
However, from what I can fathom from the last part of your comment, yes, that flag was a part of history. Unfortunately, it was a symbol of HATRED and TERROR to tens of millions of people. And, let’s look at it this way: How do you think FoxNoise (or even you) would react if someone suggested that the WW2 Imperial Japanese flag be placed anywhere at Pearl Harbor for, you know, “history” reasons? Something tells me the reaction would feature a lot of vilifying invective and, inevitably, something about “they lost” or “they were defeated” being reason enough to keep that flag from anywhere near Pearl Harbor. Remember that the CONFEDERATE BATTLE FLAG was originally raised in South Carolina as a memorial to the CONFEDERATE ATTACK ON A UNITED STATES FORT which led to the Civil War. And it remained there as a symbol of SOUTHERN DEFIANCE OF AND HOSTILITY TO the integrationist movement in the late 50s and early 60s. In simpler words, Ruth, that flag is a flag of TREASON against the United States of America.
How has FoxNoise reacted to stories of American young people attempting to join ISIS? Yet, FoxNoise can’t be bothered to even acknowledge the removal of the flag of TRAITORS from government-owned property. (Then again, FoxNoise has a tie to ISIS, thanks to the Saudi connection, so treason may come fairly easy to FoxNoise.)
CNN went to the joyful crowd reactions on the scene.
With all my love,
