Fox News: Trillion Dollar Coin Will Weigh 17,774 Tons

For those of you not familiar with the story of the trillion dollar coin, here’s a very concise overview of why the idea is being considered. When you’re finished, you’ll understand exactly why the GOP is terrified of the coin being minted, even to the point of creating a bill trying to stop that from happening. Fox is contributing to the discussion by expecting their viewers to believe that such a coin would be made out of a trillion dollars of platinum, and weigh roughly 17,774 tons. Or, as Fox quaintly also put it, equal in weight to 89 blue whales. Or a ballistic missile submarine.

Does Fox really think we’re that stupid? Or are they that stupid that they actually believe this hype?

UPDATE: The U.S. Treasury says it will not issue the coin.

Lol… You say I know nothing? Fox never claimed the coin would weigh tons. That graphic was put up in humor. But I know it makes your hearts feel all warm inside to believe that Fox thinks the coin would weigh tons… So go ahead… But if you believe it because Aria said it, then don’t accuse me of being a sheep. Not once did I claim that coinage is representative in size and weight to precious metals.

Anywho… Notice how the idea was scrapped? It was a dumb idea. So let me have more attacks on my intelligence.

Joseph, if you hit the “watch on Youtube” and read the comments, many posters looked up what money would weigh if it was consistent with the cost of materials. It was kinda stagering that a $100 bill would weigh 256 pounds if it was actually made from $100 worth of the materials used in paper money.

It was just as staggering that the dime is the only coin that would stay close enough to it’s current size to be recognizable.

Other than that, thanks for beating me to the punch on pwning Joshua’s little spin.

Joshua, perhaps you should direct your comment to FoxNoise. I watched the video and it appears that the graphic was simply put up by the producers as nothing more than just a simple scare tactic, having no other real purpose.

Of course, no one actually believes (not even the pinheads at FoxNoise*) that the coin would’ve actually weighed nearly that much but FoxNoise hasn’t been much for letting rationality take precedence.

If they wanted to be honest (not something FoxNoise hosts hold in high esteem), they’d point out that a “quarter” doesn’t weigh “a quarter of a dollar” nor does it weigh as much as “25 cents (pennies).” The simple fact (something else FoxNoise doesn’t hold in high esteem) is that the Mint could produce a coin, no bigger than a dime and made of a diamond-plutonium combination, with a face value of 1 Googol dollars and that’s how much it would be worth. Bear in mind, for example, that it costs more money to make a penny than the face value.

(*Referring to the talking heads that host the various programs and their guests. Their viewers, on the other hand, not so much.)

@visitor55 – You’re expecting a lot from FuxNuze viewers if you expect them to think in any fashion. They just hear, put up their faux rage, email everyone, then go listen to Rush or Levin. And yes, they are THAT stupid.

And our resident little buckaroo Joshua wants something in context..isn’t that special. I get it though, he only wants the context when it’s Fox’s ox getting gored. On the other hand, if the idiots on Fox run with anything, regardless of context, he’s okay with that.

You don’t know anything, teabagger Fox intern spammer.

I would really like to see the segment to put the graphic into context. I would venture to guess that they were demonstrating what a trillion dollars worth of platinum would look like, not that they thought the coin would actually be that big. I really don’t know enough to make a judgement based on the graphic alone.
