Martha MacCallum Hearts Jason Mattera!?!
As Jon Stewart once said, conservative victimization is the true genius of what Fox News has accomplished. As such, Fox "News," didn't waste any time providing validation for right wing James O'Keefe wannabe, Jason Mattera, who is the most recent of a steady Fox parade of right wingers being persecuted by the forces of evil liberalism. Jason is very upset about the "hypocrisy" of NY Bloomberg's promotion of gun control while he maintains an armed security detail. On both Monday night's Hannity and Tuesday's Fox & Friends, Mattera was presented as a (LOL) credible "journalist" who was "bullied" by Bloomberg's guys. The fiction that the homophobic, chicken hawk Mattera is a "journalist" who was beset by ruffians was further advanced on Tuesday's "America's Newsroom," where alleged "news" host, Martha MacCallum gave him some sweet face time and lots of loving

We at News Hounds have not forgotten how Sean Hannity has yet to fulfill his promise to be waterboarded for charity in order to prove it's not torture. Hannity made that promise on April 22, 2009, almost four years ago. But today, when a Think Progress staff member asked him about it on the radio, he was suddenly - well, not interested in discussing it.

Last week, Fox "News" gave birth to a bouncing baby right wing meme which seems to have been conceived in right wing anger over the Obama administration's decision to send F-16's to Egypt - or, as articulated by some on Fox, a "gift to the Islamic Brotherhood." The Fox midwives, Sean Hannity, Fox Nation, the Fox News website, and Fox & Friends (two segments) were also joined, over the week-end, by Fox News HQ's Uma Pemmaraju and Jeanine Pirro. Pemmaraju's questions were leading and neither of her freshman congressmen guests (one a conservative Democrat) supported the sale, Pirro's almost histrionic questions were right wing talking points (Morsi hates Israel, Morsi is part of a terrorist group etc, etc) and both of her right wing guests (KT McFarland and Col. David Hunt) spoke against the sale. We're into a new week, and I'm please to announce that the newborn meme is thriving as evidenced by yet another Sean Hannity propaganda piece.

When challenged about its claim of being "fair & balanced, Fox management said that Fox "opinion" shows were exempt from this claim - but that the actual "news" shows actually do "fair & balanced" coverage. While we know that Newsbusters, Brent Bozell's right wing hack site that exposes "liberal bias" no matter how obscure the media, is frequently sourced (Fox's, LOL, "Bias Alert" column) by the Fox News website, it is also sourced by Fox "news" shows that are supposedly "fair & balanced." This cozy relationship (albeit chaste, Christian, and heterosexual) has been seen on several occasions during Bret Baier's "news" show when he has given them, without noting their right wing bias, a shout out. And Tuesday night, he even described them, ROFLMAO, as a credible "media watcher" during his hit piece about CBS being in the tank for the president. Funny, if an MSNBC host acknowledged Media Matters, the Newsbusters would be all over it like - uh - flies on shit?!

Sean Hannity purported to hold a discussion attacking the “left-wing media” for their failure to cover the allegations against Senator Bob Menendez that he engaged underage prostitutes in the Dominican Republic. Unfortunately, for Hannity, he used the case of Senator Larry Craig, arrested for soliciting sex in an airport, for comparison. Once he started talking about Craig, Hannity couldn't seem to stop. Craig was suddenly a right-wing martyr du jour.

The Boy Scouts are considering making a change in their current policy which bans openly gay scouts and leaders. In covering this issue, Fox News has provided analysis that looks at both sides of the issue. However, as Media Matters points out, the Fox reporter providing the back story advances the bogus right wing connection between homosexuality and pedophilia. What is also interesting is that all the segments (Bret Baier's Special Report, America's Newsroom, Happening Now) show commentary from Rob Schwarzwalder, the vice-president of the Family Research Council which the SPLC has designated as a hate group for its virulently anti-gay beliefs and statements such as one that Schwarzwalder made for one of Baier's segments. Just because the Fox propaganda isn't immediately discernible doesn't mean that it's not there!

After griping for weeks about how the mainstream media gives the Obama administration a free ride – and using words like “swooning” and “fawning” to describe the recent 60 Minutes interview with Hillary Clinton and President Obama - Greta Van Susteren’s interview with Clinton last night was surprisingly subdued. Van Susteren didn’t “fawn” on Clinton exactly, but neither did she press aggressively, call Clinton names or say she should be fired.

If you're a regular O'Reilly watcher, you know he's had it in for Colin Powell who, for some reason, got mixed into O'Reilly's racial resentment over the election. But last night, O'Reilly hosted Powell for a spirited debate that was mostly respectful. That is, if you don't count how O'Reilly “had to ask" if Powell's support for Obama was due to anger at Republicans over the war in Iraq. I guess O'Reilly didn't “have to ask" the questions O'Reilly has previously asked him: whether Powell supported Obama because of any “racial business.”

So a president gives an interview to The New Republic and does some pushing back on Fox News' 24/7 efforts to undermine his presidency – and Fox News goes off the deep end with exactly the kind of behavior he called them out for. Last night, Sean Hannity and two Fox News contributors helped hype the hysteria as they argued that Obama is targeting the First Amendment and trying to create a “state run media.” All because Fox has been “the only media organization on this planet that has delivered fair and balanced coverage” of that enemy of the Constitution, AKA Barack Obama. But you know what? I think Fox sees very clearly that the real danger is not any kind of threat to stifle Fox but to make it irrelevant.
Read moreThe President is Going After the First Amendment and Free Speech, Screams Fox
Fox News' outrage at President Obama’s critical remarks about their network is becoming hysterical. It’s not a simple matter of their being pissed at his criticism. No, the President is trying to shut them down. He’s going after the First Amendment just as he went after the Second. And he’s sending the country down the tubes because without a free Fox there is no free America. So, at least, said “legal analyst” Peter Johnson Jr., appearing on Fox and Friends for the second morning in a row.
