Last night, I posted about Bill O'Reilly's erroneous complaint that Republicans had been excluded from the March on Washington anniversary. Tonight, O'Reilly graciously corrected his error and apologized.

Fox News is right there looking out for you - white people. Their latest effort, in their own words: Mother Of Two Beaten By Gang Of Black Teenage Girls In Brutal 'Racist Attack.' Notice how "Racist Attack" is in quotes? That's because it has not been verified. But why wait for something like confirmation to start the racial fear mongering? (H/T Barbara S.)

As sure as the New Testament follows the Old, when Todd Starnes reports on some perceived affront to Christianity, it makes it over to Fox News which never wastes an opportunity to smear atheists as the enemy of all that is good and holy. Starnes' most recent story involves a Jewish firefighter who wants to display a Christian cross as part of a Princeton, New Jersey 9-11 memorial. And wouldn't ya know it but those evil atheists, are threatening to sue the town because the steel beam, salvaged from the ruins of 9-11, has a Christian cross cut into it. The atheists assert that if this is on public land, there are First Amendment issues. So who better to provide a "fair & balanced" look at this, than the oh, so fair & balanced and very Christian Martha MacCallum who is always willing to carry that cross and who dismissed church/state issues cuz we have "bigger fish to fry."

Last night, Fox News’ On The Record did its part to smear the 50^th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s March On Washington and "I Have A Dream" speech by teaming up with Fox News contributor Herman Cain to promote the false impression that conservatives had been excluded from the commemoration. In reality, top Republicans declined invitations to attend and speak. But that information was downplayed and mentioned only in passing as both Cain and host Greta Van Susteren, along with a Fox News producer, made an uninformed and uninformative effort to promote a narrative that the event had deliberately snubbed conservatives. Also ignored? How Scott has distorted Dr. King's message in the past. UPDATED

On yesterday’s Your World, Louisiana State Senator Elbert Guillory, who recently switched from Democrat to Republican, spoke about President Obama saying Martin Luther King “would like” the Affordable Care Act. Neil Cavuto asked Guillory, “Do you think that Martin Luther King would embrace this?” As if nobody could have guessed that Guillory would have used the opening to grab the Martin Luther King mantle for himself and use it to dis both President Obama and Obamacare.

I’m sure none of our regular readers would be surprised to know that Bill O’Reilly trolled the March on Washington anniversary celebration today with his eagle (white) eye out for African American transgressions. O’Reilly could have used the day to try to broaden his understanding of African American concerns. But no. Tonight, he scolded, condescended and even distorted the truth to promote his grievances – at the same time that he pointed a  misleading finger of accusation that the attendees were too full of grievances. Oh, the irony. UPDATED

Last month, I wrote about how Fox News viewers are off-the-chart old and getting older. That trend seems to be increasing, if the August ratings are any guide. Although Fox News continues its dominance as the top eyeball getter of Fox News, its share of the coveted 25-54 year-old viewers shrank precipitously.

I don't think anybody who's commemorating the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington today would argue that we have not made great strides in civil rights since 1963. Or that we still have a way to go. But Fox News seems to be doing its best to turn the clock back both by fanning the flames of racial divisiveness, creating outright hostility and suggesting we have come far enough, if not too far. Even worse, Bill O'Reilly is poaching Martin Luther King's name to foment racial hostility.

We know what Fox News thinks about racial issues. As Newshounds Ellen pointed out, in a truly awesome article on Salon, "Fox News, however, seems determined to persuade America that civil rights have gone too far and even suggest that whites are the real racial victims now." So one wonders what MLK, if he had lived, would think about Fox News which is the mouthpiece for a political ideology that King was vehemently opposed to. Another interesting question would be how Fox News, if it had been around during the Civil Rights era, would have covered Dr. King - especially given that he was a champion of organized labor, a guaranteed annual income, and redistribution of wealth - not exactly issue that Fox News and its right wing audience would be in agreement with.
