Fox Nation Headline Lies: Tony Blair Did Not Say 'There Is Problem WITH Islam'

Posted by Priscilla -26.60pc on June 02, 2013 · Flag

In what appears to be a desperate attempt to validate the Fox News' Islamophobia, Fox Nation has actually posted a headline that misquotes the former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair. The headline reads "Tony Blair: 'Be Honest...There Is A Problem With Islam'." The real problem is that Blair, writing in the Daily Mail regarding the Islamic extremism that seems to have been a factor in the death of a British soldier, says the following: "But there is a problem within Islam – from the adherents of an ideology that is a strain within Islam. And we have to put it on the table and be honest about it." Not "with Islam" but "within" - big difference.

So rather than broadbrushing Islam, as the Fox Nation headline claims, Blair said that there is a problem "within" Islam; i.e. a subset. In decrying contemporary Islamic radicalism, Blair says that he is afraid that the current radical "strain is not the province of a few extremists" and "it has at its heart a view about religion and about the interaction between religion and politics that is not compatible with pluralistic, liberal, open-minded societies." He opines that because people are not willing to admit that this world view is dangerous, it gives strength to the radicals and is disheartening for "those within Islam – and the good news is there are many – who actually know this problem exists and want to do something about it."

This information is available in the Fox Nation link which quotes Blair as saying that there is a problem "within Islam." But Fox Nation knows that its inflammatory and defamatory headline is all the readers (!) need to know - as shown by the usual string of bigoted comments.

If you have the time, you might want to let Fox Nation know about their lie:

Interestingly, Fox Nation doesn't seem to have its own web address. Just this, when you click "contact us" on their main page. But they still have their mission statement which talks about how they're "fair & balanced." Obviously, misleading headlines constitute fairness and balance?

Those who run Fox Nation, a Fox right wing propaganda outlet, know that words matter!

@ Paul Julian: Just imagine the outrage from FoxNoise if some “liberal” made a slip and actually said, “There’s a problem with Christianity … er, I’m sorry, I meant to say a problem withIN Christianity . . .” Somehow, I don’t think that the self-correction would be noted—at least, not until FoxNoise had squeezed a week’s worth of outrage from the comment.

And there’s a problem within Christianity, also… and one that’s got a greater chance of adversely affecting our fellow citizens’ lives than radical Islam ever could or does… much the same ideology, too, for that matter…
