Bill O'Reilly is obsessed with what he believes is the demise of a "traditional" America in which white Christian men ruled over women who stayed home and made babies, gays who were closeted, and minorities who knew their place and didn't want hand-outs. In yet another screed about the loss of the good times, O'Reilly's Tuesday night's Talking Points focused on what he believes are examples of a nanny state America. On Wednesday, in Part II of "America's Biggest Problems," he focused on lack of "traditional" accountability in librul America: A NJ Supreme Court decision which Bill opposes because an evil, pregnant woman was not sufficiently punished and NY Governor Cuomo's proposal to expand abortion rights which Bill opposes because evil women will take advantage of it to have abortions "for any reason" - a theme echoed throughout O'Reilly persecution of the murdered abortion provider, Dr. George Tiller. After Bill bloviated, he lectured Bob Beckel while further bloviating, lying, and pushing his misogynistic anti-abortion propaganda. Ah, good times....
In response to Bill's question of whether he understands the court decision, Bob Beckel said that as a recovering alcoholic, he understands it completely and informed Bill, who doesn't understand the ruling, that the child wasn't a crack baby because there were only small traces of cocaine in the child's system. He noted that if children were removed from every woman who used drugs, it would overload the foster system. Bill, in classic fashion, tried to twist Beckel's comment in accusing him of believing that it's acceptable for woman to take addictive drugs "two days before giving birth" and "we won't hold her accountable." As I reported, the woman denied taking drugs and there was no criminal finding that she did. Also, the mother initially lost custody of the child and the sibling for six months. Dr. Bill claimed that the neurological damage won't be known until the child is older. Bill accused Beckel of "making excuses" when he said that far more damage is done by alcohol.
After scolding Beckel to "stay on this decision," Bill pontificated that New Jersey did not hold this woman accountable. Bill doesn't understand that this happened five years ago and not immediately before this decision because he asserted that if it were up to him, the child (now 5) should be removed from the house for 30 days during which time the mother would be drug tested. (Again, the child was removed for six months and returned when protective services deemed it appropriate.) Bill said that the woman should be charged for smoking crack cocaine when, according to the court record, "crack" cocaine wasn't involved. He lied when he said that "nothing happened." (She temporarily lost custody) He brayed "this is wrong" and suggested that the woman is a crack addict - a totally unfounded allegation.
Bill then moved on to his newest fatwa target, NY Governor Mario Cuomo who is proposing legislation to expand abortion rights which O'Reilly describes as "open season" because it will have no restrictions on abortion. Bill is lying - the legislation will expand access to late term abortion when there is a danger to the health of the mother. Bill claimed that our society is barbaric because "of the way we treat the unborn." He blamed the "left" for these policies. (Meanwhile the right is promoting barbaric policies to restrict a woman's right to her own body).
In a stunning moment of irony, narcissist Bill claimed our society is narcisstic. After snarking, "my body, my choice, he added "it's all about you." (It's all about Bill!) He wanted to know what was wrong with the values, "honesty, hard work, and self reliance," of the 50's apart from the lack of Civil Rights. And in another moment of irony, considering that Bill hates welfare but wants poor women to be forced to give birth, Bill claimed that people today want "hand-outs." (Code talk for those lazy minorities?) He and Beckel argued about the increase in disabilities with O'Reilly suggesting that a lot of people are faking it.
What was wrong with the 50's? For starters, women's career ladders were extremely limited. Minorities had no career ladders and were relegated to low wage jobs. Gays could be arrested under "sodomy" statutes. Certain universities and country clubs discriminated against Jews. Because there was no safety net, those who fell on hard times ended up in the gutter and stayed there. Non-Christian pupils were forced to say Christian prayers at school. And while the nice Irish-Catholic women, like those in Bill's neighborhood had access to "procedures" from reputable doctors, those women who didn't have money and connections died in back alley abortions.
That's right Bill, our bodies our choices - choice that will not be constrained by aging examples of the white, Christian, male power structure that continues to try to deny us these choices. If O'Reilly doesn't want a nanny state, he needs to stay out of our uteri. Ewww.
