Governor Rick Snyder of Michigan may only have a 38% approval rating and be in a bit of trouble with regard to his re-election chances, but you’d never know that from watching Your World’s thinly-disguised infomercial for his governorship in which host Neil Cavuto talked about the “palpable” “magic” Snyder has worked in Michigan - before closing with an enthusiastic, “Touché to you!”
The pretext for the discussion was President Obama’s spending initiatives. But it wasn’t long before the interview turned to Snyder’s record and a projected budget surplus. Cavuto all but endorsed Snyder's re-election on the spot.
Cavuto took a phony stab at balance by saying, “Now a lot of your critics have said, ‘Governor, the magic to what you’ve done in Michigan is that you’ve balanced the budget and gotten this surplus on the backs of the poor.’” But Cavuto immediately hinted to his audience that this was nothing to dwell on as he quickly added, “And you’ve heard it all before. How do you answer that?”
Predictably, Snyder used the opportunity to gloat about his successes. “That’s not correct at all. …What we’ve done is really focused on job creation and job creation for everybody because that’s the solution to many of our issues, is that people are working, they can have a good livelihood. …One of the things I’ve done in the last two or three years is a program called Healthy Kids Dental, about spreading better dental care to kids in need, and the other one is we’re investing in early childhood now, which is, I think, is an important initiative. We have a waiting list in Michigan of about 29,000 kids, and this budget, what I want to do next year is, were going to eliminate that waiting list.”
MoveOn has a petition calling Gov. Snyder’s budget “immoral,” saying it would cut funding for public schools and universities, while cutting taxes for large corporations. He would raise taxes on the working poor and push 14,000 children into poverty.
But, apparently, that’s part of that old hat Cavuto found too boring to dwell on. Not when he had some gushing to do. “You’ve done more than that,” Cavuto said. “You were dealing with an exodus of companies and businesses from your state. …Somehow you stopped that bloodletting. What changed?”
“We had the dumbest tax in the United States, Neil,” Snyder answered. “The Michigan business tax… we wiped it out, and replaced it with a corporate income tax that’s simple, fair, and efficient. You take your net income by 6%, write a check, and go run your business. We’ve done regulatory reform where we’ve gotten rid of over 1000 rules.”
Cavuto ended the segment leaving no doubt about how viewers should regard Synder’s tenure as governor: “I’ve been in Michigan recently, and it is palpable, Governor, so touché to you. Be well sir, very good seeing you again.”
