Neil Cavuto Righteously Apologizes For Hosting Fraudulent CIA Agent, Wayne Simmons

Fox’s Neil Cavuto responded to the arrest of frequent guest Wayne Simmons, who turned out not to be the former CIA agent he was supposed to be, just how you would hope a news host would handle such a thing.

At the end of his show yesterday, Cavuto took a few moments to comment on Simmons' arrest for fraud:

CAVUTO: Federal prosecutors now claim Wayne Simmons was not a former CIA operative or, for that matter, ever worked at the CIA at all. Now, if it’s true that all our due diligence and vetting on Mr. Simmons missed this, that’s big and that’s on me. And only me.

You as viewers have little reason to be comforted by the excuse that Mr. Simmons might—and I stress might—have fooled many others, including no less than former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

But the responsibility to check out who comes on this show ultimately lies with me. After all, it’s my Italian name on it. I’m in charge of it. I decide who comes on it. If, in so doing, I wasn’t thorough enough or followed up enough, it’s on me, and I apologize.

You have a right to expect guests who appear here to be who they say they are here. Now, it’s a very rare slip up, but it’s a very big slip up, and I will make doubly sure something like this never ever happens again. I value your trust and I promise, I promise, to work very hard to regain it.

Simmons appeared on many other Fox News shows, not just Cavuto’s. But he is a senior vice president and managing editor so presumably he had some responsibility for Simmons’ appearances beyond just this show. However, Cavuto spoke only about his own show. I’m not aware of any other host apologizing.

Regardless, we spend a lot of time criticizing Fox. When praise is due, we try to give it. So good on ya, Neil Cavuto.

Watch it below, from the October 16 Your World.

“You as viewers have little reason to be comforted by the excuse that Mr. Simmons might—and I stress might—have fooled many others, including no less than former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.”

Filling in the blanks—“So, I won’t mention it, right. Because that would make me look like I was trying to excuse myself by referring to supposedly smart people who were fooled by him. Like say, Donald Rumsfeld.”

Rummy was fooled by this guy? The same Rummy who believed everything Ahmed Chalabi said? The guy who presided over the worst foreign policy disaster since the Viet Nam War? That guy? Really?

You know, I really don’t feel comforted by Cavuto’s sorry-ass excuse and his attempt to soften it by throwing “fooled many others” into the mix. Two minutes online would have shown him who this guy really was but that would require him to at least feign interest in the truth. Instead he opted to present this guy as an expert and frankly there is no apology that excuses this behavior.

None.

It’s rare, but every once in a while they do the right thing.

@mlp! My sentiments exactly. A Fux Noise expert is anyone who hates our President.

I thought “real Americans didn’t apologize” — at least that was the Fox position when President Obama apologized to ME nations for his predecessor’s behavior towards them.

I echo mlp !’s sentiment: f—k them.

Funny how Fox advocates 5 pieces of identification for voting, but takes the ‘word’ of anyone claiming to be an expert.
Fuck them.

It’s nice to see that Cavuto can be a Mensch when he needs to.

I’d take it a step further - Murdoch and Ailes should apologize for allowing all the PHAUX PHOOLs to appear on air, from Billdo to Mayhem to Shammity to Jr Kernel Peters to Boo Dittly … there’s so many … and most certainly for the cretins on the Kurvy Kouch that bring the IQ of the viewing audience down to 48 on a good day. Absolutely unbelievable that these bloviating buffoons are allowed a public stage.

Hopefully this is one step closer to Fox going over the cliff without the help of real Americans, although I would like to help with he final shove.

It was an easy apology. They didn’t know Simmons was lying. Let’s see if Fox has the huevos to apologize across the board. Make a man out of Doocy.
