Juan Williams got way under Karl Rove’s thin skin today. When Rove went after Hillary Clinton for using a private email account, Williams slammed Rove for using secret emails during the Bush administration’s U.S. attorney scandal – and the disproportionate media coverage of Clinton.
As Crooks and Liars explains:
In 2007, the Bush White House said that it had lost millions emails that administrative officials had sent using Republican National Committee accounts. According to congressional investigators, many of those emails discussed official government business, including the firing of U.S. Attorneys who did not agree with Rove’s political agenda.
The U.S. Attorneys firing was raised earlier by Rep. Adam Schiff in a Fox News Sunday interview. In a panel discussion, Rove pooh-poohed Schiff’s comparison.
But Williams, after conceding Clinton’s emails should be examined, turned the tables on Rove.
WILLIAMS: I think there has been such a feeding frenzy on the right over this issue that people think it’s way out of line, and it’s to the point where it’s almost like a poker player turn over the table and saying, “Oh, we’re out of here.” You know, it’s a big bluff because they’ve got nothing when it comes to actually winning the 2016 campaign. Hillary Clinton is seven to eight points, according to Real Clear Politics, ahead of any Republican candidate at this point and you see these Republicans: “Oh, yeah, e-mail, e-mail, e- mail.”
When Karl was in trouble back in ‘07, no press coverage. Just about zero press coverage of this.
…I went back and looked. There was one “Washington Post” editorial and basically it said you guys didn’t get good guidance.
Rove tried to argue that Clinton deserved more press scrutiny “because she was the secretary of state and I was a White House aide and she is violating the rules that were laid down by - they fired an ambassador… Clinton, on her watch, she fired an ambassador for having a private email account while she has a private email account.”
But Williams wasn’t buying it.
WILLIAMS: But Karl, you fired a bunch of U.S. attorneys! …Karl, if you doubt your power, let me affirm you. You were a powerful man in Bush White House. And you were firing U.S. attorneys. And it was a scandal!
…And 95 percent of your e-mails were from the RNC… Jeb Bush has a private e-mail. You had private e-mail. …What was the RNC email called?
