Jon Stewart’s Epic Take Down Of Fox’s Phony Patriotism

Last night, Jon Stewart addressed Fox’s faux outrage over President Obama’s “coffee cup salute.” It’s must-see TV and oh so funny at Fox News’ expense.

Stewart began by noting how dysfunctional our government is as we begin a new war in the Middle East (with a delicious new jab at Sen. Lindsey Graham). “Now is the time for an adult conversation about how our government makes its most important decisions and functions in crisis,” he said. “To lead that discussion, I give you our national media.”

After playing a series of FNC's “coffee cup salute” clips (which we discussed here and here), Stewart rhetorically addressed Fox News: “Shuuuutttt uppppp. You don’t really care. You don’t really care about this. You have no principle about this. You’re just trying to score points in a game that no one else is playing.”

Stewart proved it with a clip of Bolling accusing Obama of not showing respect for the troops (because he held a coffee cup as he saluted), juxtaposed with a clip of Bolling referring to a female fighter pilot who bombed ISIS as “boobs on the ground.”

“So F*** you and all your false patriotism,” Stewart said.

There was a roar of approval and applause from the crowd.

For your Friday late afternoon enjoyment!

I am a veteran and I assure you my patriotism is not “fake”. When you salute an officer or the president you are showing courtesy and respect. It is a custom that person being saluted show equal courtesy and respect back. The salute may mean nothing to the president but it does to the miltary person. I did not like when bush did what he did. And I didn’t like obama doing it. But at least I can say bush also was wrong. Vice stewart not saying he was wrong. No he never said those words. But was quick to go to the tried and true " but but bush did it" as if that makes it ok. I would have more respect for stewart had he slammed the president then added in the rest. But that would be putting what’s right over his agenda…Salutes may mean jack to obama and stewart but then neither has worn a uniform.
