Jon Stewart did a brilliant segment exposing how the role of money in politics only seems to bother Fox News some of the time.
Stewart played clips of Fox News condemning Hillary Clinton for accepting foreign donations to the Clinton Foundation. He gave special attention to Megyn Kelly’s concern trolling: “The question remains to whom does she owe favors,” Kelly “asked.”
And yet, nobody seems to care about the corrupting power of billions of dollars of domestic donations.
To highlight the hypocrisy, Stewart later juxtaposed the clip of Kelly’s question about owing favors with one of her saying that Democratic efforts to restrict the role of money in political campaigns is “basically an attempt to limit the First Amendment.”
“I guess the rule here is money is free speech, unless that money speaks with a funny accent,” Stewart quipped.
But Stewart went on to point out how Republican Chris Christie inexplicably vetoed legislation banning hog gestation crates. The bill, according to Stewart, had overwhelming bi-partisan support, in Christie's “almost entirely pigless state” of New Jersey. “Why would Chris Christie care?" Stewart asked.
"Well either he just feels in his heart pigs have had a free ride for too long and should live in gestation crates where they are not able to turn around," Stewart continued, "or he was doing the bidding of GOP megadonor and Christie 2012 backer, Iowan Bruce Rastetter, who happened to be one of America’s top hog producers. And what’s more, Rastetter’s brother just happens to be CEO of a company that builds gestation crates. And what’s more, Christie was at Rastetter’s 2016 presidential forum, auditioning for this year’s money.”
Stewart didn’t say it directly but the implication was that you won’t hear about that on Fox.
So Stewart took matters into his own hands.
