Last week, Stuart Varney began the Your World show by scaring people about the U.S.-China climate deal that cuts U.S. greenhouse gases by 28% through 2025 and caps China’s carbon emissions by 2030. Or as Varney put it, “Reports today, the president’s planning to bypass congress with a massive environmental crackdown.” That was just the beginning of the fear mongering.
Varney’s guest was James Taylor of the Heartland Institute. Despite its folksy name, it’s a Koch-funded, climate-change denial think tank. But Varney did not tell the viewers that.
Instead, Varney said, “We cut, they don’t. We pay, they don’t. This is gonna cost Americans. We’re going to be paying so that they can pollute. Is that how it is?”
”Absolutely,” Taylor agreed. “President Obama is committing us to much more rapid emissions cuts. These are very costly. China’s gonna get a free ride, and we’re the ones paying the bill, and there’s going to be absolutely no impact on carbon dioxide emissions.”
As he spoke, a box almost crowded out the screen showing the U.S. pledged to cut carbon emissions by up to 28% by 2025.
Taylor continued, “President Obama is saying we, in the United States, are going to pay the economic price to not only freeze but dramatically reduce our carbon dioxide emissions – and China gets a free pass. They get to continue increasing their emissions, and maybe around 2030, they’ll kind of keep it about there. There’s not even any cuts in the future.”
In fact, the deal has been praised by climate experts as significant toward fighting global warming.
That was another thing Varney didn't mention.
