I am southern, born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida. My great grandfather fought in the Civil War and went blind in his later years due to the powder ignition of his rifle misfiring during battle and hitting him directly in the face. ( I hope I termed this correctly for you aficionados.) It is my understanding that this was common place during the war. I just took a 15 question pole on CNN.com and I voted mostly to remove this flag from government buildings and schools, but not to remove anything from Stone Mountain in Georgia and military bases. Don’t get me wrong, I love the south. We are so much more than this flag. Growing up as a child the Confederate flag was never brought up in conversation and it was not at all part of our daily lives. Many people in the south feel that by taking away this flag you are taking away their family heritage. I get that, I really do, however it is time to move on. We don’t need a flag, to let people know how proud we are as southerners, of our heritage and how great the south is as a place to raise our families.
I also do not understand how as a people we can hate the Confederate flag as a symbol of slavery and injustice, yet welfare is accepted. Welfare is a modern and ACCEPTED form of slavery that rewards the wrong choices and keeps people below the poverty level with no incentive to rise up and take charge of their lives and escape those chains of poverty.
Perhaps we should remove the Confederate flag when the last welfare check is mailed out. Maybe Senator Graham and the Governor of South Carolina can lead the charge. Hell, any politician step up and lead us away this form slavery.
