Unfortunately for Bill O’Reilly, Mother Jones has video of O’Reilly saying what he now claims he never said.
As I’ve previously posted, Mother Jones has published a well-researched and well-sourced article detailing many discrepancies between O’Reilly’s war-reporting claims and evidence. Or to put it another way, Fox News may have its own Brian Williams problem.
Despite the facts presented by Mother Jones, O’Reilly has responded with attacks rather than answers about the discrepancies. Neither O’Reilly nor Fox responded to Mother Jones’ many requests for comment before publication. But in an interview with Politico’s Dylan Byers, O’Reilly nonetheless called the Mother Jones article “a hit piece,” and “a piece of garbage.” He called co-author David Corn a “despicable guttersnipe” and “a liar.”
Byers also reports:
In the interview, O’Reilly said that he never claimed to have been on the Falkland Islands.
“I was not on the Falkland Islands and I never said I was. I was in Buenos Aires... In Buenos Aires we were in a combat situation after the Argentines surrendered.”
…”It was clear that I did not say I was in the Falkland Islands. I’ve done myriad interviews over the years and I never said that,” O’Reilly told On Media.
O’Reilly also told TVNewser, “I never said I was on the Falkland Islands, nobody was.”
But among other contradictions, Mother Jones included a video of O’Reilly saying:
I was in a situation one time, in a war zone in Argentina, in the Falklands, where my photographer got run down and then hit his head and was bleeding from the ear on the concrete. And the army was chasing us. I had to make a decision. And I dragged him off, you know, but at the same time, I’m looking around and trying to do my job, but I figure I had to get this guy out of there because that was more important.
You can watch that video below.
