If you watch Fox News, you learn that it's hard out there for a rich, white dude. In the alternate universe of America's fair & balanced newsroom, America's rich, white, patriarchal right wing live in an alternate universe in which they are the targets of racist attacks and general oppression at the hands of jealous, greedy, lazy, dark skinned takers. As members of the persecuted, privileged class, they take particular umbrage to the term "white privilege," a sociological construct that has, since the beginnings of this nation, created a racial divide in order to maintain white hegemony. Nobody exemplifies white privilege more than trust fund baby Tucker Carlson who is mighty pissed that the filthy, Marxist masses would impugn his white privilege, a badge that he carries with pride. Once again, we're reminded of why Jon Stewart called Carlson a total "dick."
Sunday, on Fox & Friends, Carlson interviewed Breitbart (no bias there, no sireee) columnist Kurt Schlichter about a recent article in which Schlichter whined about those nasty "pony tailed grad students" who are telling righteous white guys to "check their privilege" - a reaction to the new right wing boy hero, Princeton student Tal Fortang who whined about how this anti-white attitude is pervasive in academia despite racism being all gone. (Ahem) That white privilege is all about being sensitive to those whose life experiences and perspectives are different was lost on Tucker Carlson whose life was based on white privilege. His dad was an ambassador to the Seychelles during the George H.W. Bush administration and the former head of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. His mother was the heiress to the Swanson food empire.
Carlson began the Fox & Friends "Trouble With Schools" segment with the hated statement "check your privilege" which he described as "the left's newest charge." He described Schlichter as a hero who is "standing up against this attack." He quoted part of Schlichter's article which asserts that those who claim that there is white privilege just don't understand that this privilege is the result of "hard work," "delaying gratification" and "character." Schlichter goes on to deny that it's not about race (it is) but "about character."
Schlichter, who obviously thinks that rich, white folks are better people, claimed that the term white privilege is "the latest leftist insanity" and "an attempt to grab the moral high ground that they don't deserve." Tucker thinks "it's silly" because "some white people are privileged, some aren’t. Some black people are, some aren’t. It strikes me as, by definition, a racist attack in that it’s making a generalization, a negative one based on skin color." (Awwww) Schlichter responded. “Absolutely, it’s un-American and immoral. It makes you forever and forever stuck into one category." He whined that the term is "an attempt to shut down the argument and adjudicate your value."
Carlson quoted from Schlichter's article: "What you call privilege is just me being better than you." Schlichter, who once said that "being a veteran is not a get out of jail free card," said that successful people don't "babble" about privilege and bragged about how he pulled himself up from his bootstraps. He continued to attack those nasty liberals: “All of us have worked, all of us have achieved something. That is how we measure character, that’s how we measure what the value of a person is, not some arbitrary category imposed by some pony tailed grad students who have taken too many gender study seminars." Carlson laughed and said "that's so fantastic."
Tucker Carlson's doesn't have to worry about being racially profiled, being denied a job or housing on account of his skin color, living in a violence prone neighborhood because he can't afford to live elsewhere, having his ethnicity denigrated constantly on Fox News, being part of a justice system that is inherently unfair to those with the same skin tone, and a whole host of other inequities based on white privilege. Put it this way, if Tucker Carlson thinks his white privilege is all about "character," he can keep on pretending!
