Remember when the Dixie Chicks got pulled from country stations after they criticized Pres. Bush? Country folk were "shocked" that they "attacked" Pres. Bush. Flash forward to 2013 and country star (?!) Larry Gatlin is attacking President Obama who, while not identified, seems to be the person doing the "beatings" in Gatlin's new song, "The Beatings Will Continue." But rather than face a firestorm of criticism for his lack of patriotism, Gatlin, who has previously attacked the president in a Fox News.com article, got to debut his song on Mike Huckabee's program. Not only did Huck praise the song, but he even accompanied Gatlin. Inquiring minds want to know if "The Beatings Will Continue" will be the new Tea Party anthem?!
Gatlin's concern for the common folk was articulated in his article, on the Fox News website, in which he blasted President Obama for temporarily shutting down Gulf of Mexico oil drilling after the Deepwater Horizen oil spill. Larry was outraged that the president was caving to them, thar "touchy-feely, warm and fuzzy, kumbaya singin', tree huggin' granola eatin,' Birkenstock wearin', platitude spewing hypocrites" who were hurting the livelihood of the "working man." (Working women obviously not a concern for country folk).
While Gatlin, not an environmental scientist, described the spill as horrible, he also opined that "things happen" and "it ain't a perfect world, deal with it." He described Obama with the vaguely race baiting term so popular in the racist right, "community organizer in chief," and suggested that Obama and an unnamed Greenpeace person, be beaten, by Gatlin's father, with a Birkenstock. Gatlin obviously pines for the good old days of Jim Crow because he finished by declaring that if they don't lift the ban on drilling, they should be hung "from the highest tree."
Gatlin still fancies himself the voice of the downtrodden who, according to Gatlin, are being "beaten" by somebody who sure sounds like the president. Check out the Tea Party talking points in his newest song, "The Beatings Will Continue" in which Obama isn't specifically identified but the references to Princeton and Harvard (Yale thrown in for no apparent reason except perhaps as a warning about Hilary Clinton?) and other right wing talking points make it pretty clear that Gatlin ain't happy with the present occupant of the White House.
“We’re gonna mind your own business
We’re gonna mind your health
We’re gonna re-create everybody equal
We’re gonna re-distribute all the wealth
We’re gonna make sure all the rich folks pay their fair share
We’re gonna apologize and surrender to our enemies everywhere
We’re gonna put a tax on everything…standing still, and everything that moves
And the beatings will continue, until morale improves.
Now here’s what we want you good, hard-workin American’s to do
We want you to just sit there and take your beatin’ like a man, or a woman
Now here’s what we want you good, hard-workin American’s to do
We want you to just sit there and take your beatin’ like a man, or a woman
Because we know how to do this
And the more money we tax you, and send it to…Egypt…Let’s send them some more airplanes
Okay?
And the beatings will continue, until morale improves.”
No offense intended, but we’re smarter than you
We went to Princeton, Harvard and Yale…you went to (your state) U
We know how to get America back on track
We’re gonna lay the whip on every American‘s back"
Unless Larry's country folk are part of the top 1%, they, as well as American corporations, are paying historically low taxes. Gatlin's "beatings" can't be too bad if, under Obama, taxes are the lowest they've been since Truman. (And that's sourced from Fox News!) And about that commie wealth redistribution thing - LOL - tax money received from them, thar librul states goes to the states where Gatlin's garbage gets traction. But did ya catch the reference to planes to Egypt. Where have I heard that before? Oh, Fox News, right!
Maybe it wasn't intentional but what I find most interesting was that reference to the whip which, in the good old days before that war of "Northern aggression," was used by the good white folks to punish those uppity dark folks, one of whom, according to Gatlin, is now doing the beatings. At any rate, we get it. Gatlin wants "his country back." Nice to see the "fair & balanced" network giving him the platform to express himself! And while the Dixie Chicks were smeared for being unpatriotic, I'm sure that Galin is considered a true patriot!
