Michele Bachmann visited The O’Reilly Factor last night to discuss (again) how she used her time with President Obama at the White House Christmas party to request that he bomb Iran. O’Reilly made it clear he found this a ridiculous idea.
Bachmann, who is retiring from Congress, explained her actions to O’Reilly: “I knew that this would be the last time that I would speak to the president as a member of Congress and I thought, I want to say something substantive to him about what I think is the most consequential issue of the day."
Bachmann said that her son told her not to embarrass him so she waited until after the photo op to confront Obama. She said she wanted to “make sure that I left him with a message.”
Bachmann claimed that as a member of the House Intelligence Committee, she is certain Iran is seeking not just to get a nuclear weapon but to use it to “annihilate” Israel. “They’ve also announced they will use it against the United States of America,” she said. “So this is the ultimate high-stakes Bingo. We can’t get this wrong.”
O’Reilly interrupted to ask whether Bachmann’s son had run away from home after that. That was his first signal that he didn’t exactly take Bachmann’s fear mongering seriously. Then he smacked down the whole notion that we should bomb Iran.
O’REILLY: Certainly you know that if President Obama bombed Iran that would start World War III. The unintended consequences of a unilateral military action – certainly when there’s a negotiation taking place – the whole world would turn against us and it would be, it would be an unbelievable situation. You know that.
Bachmann argued that she’s not calling for “bombing Iran indiscriminately” but only the “nuclear hardware.”
O’Reilly interrupted again. "If one bomb from one American plane falls on Iran, particularly while these negotiations are under way, it’s World War III," he reiterated. "You know about all this and so I’m a bit surprised that you were that 'Let’s bomb Iran.'”
However, O’Reilly did give her props for bringing the issue back to people’s attention.
