Glenn Beck Wants To Abolish Separation Of Church And State

There is irony in Glenn Beck’s comparison of the Obama administration to the Third Reich. Like the Nazis, who constructed a mythical heroic past for the German people, Glenn Beck teaches (!?) a version of history which serves to create a divinely ordained and, in some part, mythic past for his “heartland” populist movement (?!) This alternative view of America’s past is straight out of the Christian right wing’s effort to rewrite American history to fit it’s Anglo-Saxon, “Christian nation” mythology. Like Julius Streicher, a Nazi whose anti-Semitic views provided the basis for Nazi propaganda, Beck demonizes those who, in Streicher’s words, are poisoning the culture. For Beck, it’s liberals who are destroying the sacred foundations of American society. Wednesday, November 25th, Beck provided some history and theology that was straight out of Dan Brown and W. Cleon Skousen. It was vintage Beck – complete with the intense stares into the camera and choke in the voice. And the message just wasn't just about rewriting history - it was about dismantling the First Amendment! I guess it's just part of Beck's "100 year plan" or is it 1,000 year Reich? It's so confusing!

On Saturday's (11/21/09) Forbes on Fox, the first segment featured fear mongering about rationing in the health care reform bill. As usual, there were no experts on to discuss the contents of the bill or about the current state of health care insurance in America. Instead, the “free marketeers” on the panel argued that there’s no need for reform because anyone can go to the emergency room. Glenn Beck titles one of his TV and Radio commentaries, “One True Thing.” His cult followers say that he speaks the truth about the evil, socialist, Marxist, Nazi, anti-Christ Obama agenda. But in dissecting two of his statements, made yesterday (November 24th), it would appear that truth, in connection with Glenn Beck, is an oxymoron. News Hound Ellen pointed out that Beck claimed that liberals “kicked the ROTC out of San Francisco” and that all charges were dropped against those charged with the Haditha massacre. I didn’t think that these statements were accurate; so I did a little fact checking. If using Bill Adair’s “Fact Check” machine, both of Beck's statements are “pants on fire” lies.

There's a lot of buzz in the blogosphere about Dana Perino's gaffe on Hannity last night (11/24/09) when she said, "We did not have a terrorist attack on our country during President Bush’s term." I'm sure that Perino meant to say "after 9/11." But what struck me in this exchange was that the gaffe occurred as she was attacking President Obama for not calling Fort Hood a "terrorist attack" and chiding him over the importance of using the right words when talking about terrorism. Sean Hannity, who agreed with Perino about the importance of terrorism terminology, did not correct the record. In other words, it's important to call Fort Hood terrorism, even though the investigation is not yet complete, but it's OK not to call the 9/11 attacks terrorism! Video after the jump.

Chickenhawk Glenn Beck seethed yesterday (11/24/09) over President Obama’s care and caution over sending more troops into war. Not only was Obama too slow, for Beck's taste, to put more troops in harm’s way, Beck accused Obama of using the troops to play the “redistribution of wealth game with war.” How? Well, it seems that Democrats are considering a war tax on the wealthy. Beck made a big show of support for our troops – after all, this is the man who loves his country so much he’d cry for it – and while his voice caught once or twice just thinking about how much he loves our troops, Beck also made it clear that didn't mean he wanted to pay anything extra. Then, just to show how down he is with our men and women in uniform, he attacked 37-year Marine Corps vet John Murtha for a comment he made about them in 2006. With video.

I thought Bill O'Reilly was joking when I heard him say last night that his ambush guy/producer, Jesse Watters, had caused 75 year-old Bill Moyers to announce his retirement. But after watching it again via Think Progress' post, I think he at least half meant it. As Think Progress noted, O'Reilly has previously taken credit for saving Christmas, lowering gas prices and other world events. Funny how he has not taken any responsibility for the murder of Dr. George Tiller.

Bill O'Reilly and his "Culture Warriors" recently whined about how conservative women are attacked more than liberal women. Gretchen Carlson then whined about it on Fox & Friends. But as I, and Think Progress, have noted, Fox News doesn't seem to have a problem "hammering" liberal women. And now Fox's Glenn Beck has a new slam on a Democratic woman which goes beyond his last remark about poisoning the first woman Speaker of the US House of Representatives. Because of the money which the Senate appropriated for Louisiana, just before the cloture vote to allow the Senate health care bill to be debated, Beck said that Senator Mary Landrieu was a whore: "Well, I'm sorry! So we know you're hookin', but you're just not cheap." Beck also lied when he claimed that the money was generic. It's going to fund the state (also representated by a Republican senator) medicaid coffers (read poor people) which were decimated by Katrina. Yeah, Gretchen, conservative women are treated sooo badly. Has anybody on librul TV referred to Sarah Palin as a prostitute? But back to Beck. He ended his offensive diatribe with "I guess shame is dead. Shame died." Beck must be describing himself as he is totally without shame.

Bill O’Reilly And Ann Coulter Endorse Radical Conservative Clergy Position

Bill O’Reilly, an unrepentant sexual harasser, and Ann Coulter, a person who makes her livelihood on bigotry, consider themselves Christians. Like the Pharisees of the Bible, they present themselves as somehow being holier than the rest, despite the hate filled rhetoric which, in “pro-life” Bill’s case, contributed to a climate in which shooting a doctor was considered “justifiable homicide.” Meanwhile, Coulter, who is so concerned about moral degeneracy and teh gay, once “joked” about assassinating SCOTUS Judge Stevens. So it’s not surprising that Bill and Ann would jump aboard the wagon of the American Taliban (whoops right wing Christian clergy) and support their new “fatwah” (whoops, Manhattan Declaration) which is a statement that, as “Right Wing Watch” snarked, “is the only hope for preventing America from sliding into totalitarianism and Nazi-like dictatorship.” The snark isn’t far from the truth in that this statement is full of the usual anti-choice, homophobic frothing at the mouth which Bill O’Reilly and Ann Coulter traffic in. And in addition to their discussion of this new uber Christian insurgency, which compares itself to Martin Luther and those who resisted Nazis and advocates civil disobedience on the part of Christian “loons” (whoops people of conscience), Bill and Ann furthered the right wing lie that health care reform will provide subsidies for women to have abortions. But, hey, Ann and Bill are Jesus’ BFFs, so it’s all good.

Oh my, I’m about to enter the “No Spin” Zone -- and the long ordeal of O’Reilly-Palin interviews – I think this is part one million -- has, I believe, finally come to a close . . . sigh. Never has the word “final” meant so much. Let’s see, during the course of these interviews, O’Reilly gave Palin a forum to parrot meaningless right-wing talking points and criticize President Obama’s policies (she wants tax cuts, of course, and we’re also on the road to socialism – wow, that’s a novel right-wing concept), international relationships (her attitude is sort of “just say no”), Iran and Iraq (although, as I previously posted, I’m pretty sure she doesn’t know which is which), the “gotcha” mainstream media (represented, as always, by Katie Couric’s “gotcha” question about what she reads), and oh, gosh, I can’t condense all her wisdom in one post – let’s just say we were treated to all sorts of Palinanities. And last night (11/23/09) – drum roll, please – O’Reilly gave Palin a forum to modestly and sincerely talk about how she doesn’t have to be the “top dog” but she’s “willing to assist” in leading a populist movement. Oh, and by the way – since her speech is like a verbal chop-shop, I decided to count the number of, um, pauses throughout this interview that served to chop up her sentences into, like, three parts each. It was 17 . . . we’ll cover the grammar later. With video.
Is Fox Nation Aiding Anti Obama Advocacy Via “Informational” Comment?

The Fox Nation mission statement is full of high sounding language which makes the claim that Fox Nation is all about “reasoned discourse.” Yeah, right, whatever. But the inclusion, in every thread, of a comment which links to a right wing advocacy group would seem to suggest that Fox Nation is a conduit for radical anti-Obama, hard right wing advocacy regardless of the topic being discussed. I do read the Fox Nation comments after which I grab the Nexium. And for months, the same block of “spam” has appeared in every single thread which I have read. Tonight, this “informational” comment is in each lede. The linked website “Storm Lobby 50 webs.com” has information about all those bills which the republican right wing is opposing complete with names and phone numbers of legislators. Is this is a proxy mechanism for Fox Nation to encourage political action? Is it more than coincidence that Fox Nation allows this comment on every thread? Who can say? I just find it interesting….

On yesterday’s America’s News HQ, Eric Shawn interviewed Fox News’ own Liz Trotta (the same Liz Trotta who joked about assassinating then-candidate Barack Obama) about George Stephanopolous's rumored move as host of ABC's Good Morning America. She attacked Stephanopoulos and the whole notion of political operatives taking journalist positions - and for good measure attacked Tim Russert and some other non-Fox news personalities for doing the same. Think Progress (via FishbowlDC) reports that in the wake of two high-profile footage swaps, in which older, file footage showed larger crowds than those that actually showed up to see Sarah Palin and for an anti-health care rally, Fox News has issued a stern warning:
"Effective immediately, there is zero tolerance for on-screen errors. Mistakes by any member of the show team that end up on air may result in immediate disciplinary action against those who played significant roles in the “mistake chain,” and those who supervise them."
So what about criminal threats and death threats against Democrats and the Obama administration that are becoming almost routine on Fox? Or does The Daily Show have to do a segment on them before Fox is embarrassed enough to call a halt?
Imus Praises Bo Dietl After He Advocates Assaulting Harry Reid

On Fox Business' Don Imus in the Morning today, Fox News contributor Bo Dietl who, last I checked, is an expert in crime, not health care, may have committed a crime himself as he ranted on the air about "this Medicare Bill" and "small businesses are going out." Complaining that "this Medicare and Medicaid Bill - that's a bunch of baloney," Dietl added, "And this Reid, he needs to be slapped in the face... knock those glasses off his face." So how did host Imus react to his guest advocating physical assault on a U.S. Senator? Imus quietly sat by until Dietl had finished and then said about Dietl, "He's ranting and raving and turning colors, which is good." This comes on the heels of Andrew Breitbart, on Hannity, trying to blackmail Attorney General Eric Holder into holding a federal investigation into ACORN. And, of course, there are the numerous death threats against the Obama administration we have found on Fox Nation. Is there any line too violent or criminal that Fox News won't cross?
UPDATE: More on Dietl. Reader Jeff P. forwarded an article from the NY Daily News which reports that Dietl was named by a mob turncoat as one of several crooked cops who fed information to the Gambino crime family. Dietl vehemently denied the allegation.
