Poor Fox News. Their American Sniper didn’t win any big Oscars last night and several of the winners brought liberal politics into their speeches. It was so excruciating that Fox & Friends host Elisabeth Hasselbeck complained, “We can’t even watch the Oscars.”
The New York Times reported about last night’s Oscars, “Oscar nights usually do have their share of political posturing, but this was a particularly passionate evening.”
Fox News contributor Stacey Dash was “appalled.” She later said, “I miss the glamour, the elegance, the class, the majesty of the Oscars. …It just seems to be going away.”
Cohost Elisabeth Hasselbeck agreed. “How pervasive are politics right now to the point that we can’t even watch the Oscars?” she asked. But I’ll bet she “suffered” all the way through.
Dash singled out Patricia Arquette’s acceptance speech on behalf of equal rights and equal for women. Dash said, “I could not believe it. I mean, first of all, Patricia Arquette needs to do her history. In 1963, Kennedy passed an equal pay law. It’s still in effect. I didn’t get the memo that I didn’t have any rights.”
But maybe it’s Dash who needs to learn her history. From Think Progress:
Dash failed to mention that, upon signing the bill into law, Kennedy called the legislation a “first step” and stressed that “much remains to be done to achieve full equality of economic opportunity…” Kennedy said, “[O]ur journey is not complete until our wives, our mothers and daughters can earn a living equal to their efforts.”
Today, women still earn an average of 78 cents on the dollar — up just 17 cents since the Equal Pay Act. The picture is even worse for women of color. African-American women, for example, make just 64 cents for every dollar a white man makes.
Funny, not one of the “fair and balanced” hosts pointed that out.
Cohost Brian Kilmeade played the conservative victim card over American Sniper's losses. “What was the problem?” Kilmeade asked Dash. “Was Clint Eastwood the problem with American Sniper, do you think? Because he was at the RNC talking to the chair?”
“Probably, I would say probably,” Dash opined. “Which is, I mean, so sad. It’s Clint Eastwood and that film was the most beautiful film I’ve seen in a very long time.”
In other words, she had no idea why it didn't win. Even though there were other possible reasons besides Eastwood's politics.

The problem for conservatives is that their positions don’t really resonate with “the people” as much as they think they do. Look at elections. In 2010 and 2014, conservatives were only able to win because of a smaller electorate. It’s been proved time and again that conservative voters are more likely to go out to the polls—but especially when there’s no Presidential race to lure in voters. When a typical Presidential election draws between 55 and 60%, the mid-term elections usually pull no more than 40% (and in districts where there’s little competition, that figure can be as low as 25, or even 20%) and the “odd-year” elections (usually for local races such as city and county officials), the rate can drop to as little as 10%. But, voters typically identified as “conservative” or “conservative-leaning” are most likely to vote in all these elections (which helps explain why you get state legislatures dedicated to banning—or at least, heavily restricting—abortions even when a slight majority of voters support abortion rights).
You’re NOT going to hear any conservative actor or actress in Hollywood going to the podium to accept an award and make some diatribe against illegal immigrants or ranting that feminists need to quit complaining about equal pay. They know better than that because they actually need to appeal to as many potential viewers as possible and it’s kind of hard to appeal to an audience after you’ve just stood up and proved you have little empathy for anyone else. The “liberal” messaging at the Oscars was done in an INCLUSIVE manner. Rosanna Arquette wasn’t suggesting that men should make less money than women—but that women should be able to make as much money as men. Graham Moore was trying to tell people to be more accepting of “weirdos” and that it is okay to be a “weirdo,” especially if the alternative is to commit suicide; only a heartless person would come out on stage and say “Weirdos should be locked away and undergo electroshock treatments or just kill themselves so we don’t have to deal with them.” Common and John Legend’s comments were pointed reminders that voting is a right, not something that should be restricted, a sentiment that even conservatives should be able to appreciate (but, unfortunately, it’s conservatives who’ve been doing their damnedest to restrict people’s voting rights).
The ever “appalled” Dash: “I miss the glamour, the elegance, the class, the majesty of the Oscars. …It just seems to be going away.” Hmm, she sounds just like Trump (who has been saying this same sort of thing for at least the past 3 Oscar ceremonies). Looks like someone looking to score some suck up points with the Trumpster.
Thanks for enlightening Dash with regards to women and pay, Ellen. And Lizzie just sat there and let her say it without any challenge. Geez. I’ve seen this Dash on F&F and Outnumbered several times – I can’t say that I’ve been the least bit impressed with her speaking ability and her level of knowledge/accuracy. Most of the time she comes off rather clueless.
Fox Searchlight’s Birdman won Best Picture clobbering American Sniper. Yeah, you won’t hear The Dash or the rest of these Foxies bash Birdman.
Ruthless Rupy does not tolerate his employees bashing 21st Century Fox properties publicly, that includes the films under the 21st Century Fox banner. Lizzie and The Dash know the rules.
Thou shall not criticize Murdoch properties, or else!
Thank her for having so much to add to your little ’sofa bitch-off", even though you had to insert nearly every comment into her mouth for her to nod her head to. Oh, so pathetic. But still….what is even more pathetic is that MILLIONS of Americans tune in to this pathetic, twisted, disgruntled, frustrated bunch of “dividers” every morning and swallow the shit they spew with a grin on their faces.
Still, a nation of morons. Sorry….but like old grumpy mcAncient, I’m ashamed of my country too – them, and dumb asses like them; but I have been for a very, very long time.
