Fox News is still a ratings juggernaut but the age of its viewers - old and getting older - signals trouble on the horizon.
The Times wrote:
Just how old is its audience? It is impossible to be precise because Nielsen stops giving an exact figure for median age once it passes 65. But for six of the last eight years, Fox News has had a median age of 65-plus and the number of viewers in the 25-54 year old group has been falling consistently, down five years in a row in prime time, from an average of 557,000 viewers five years ago to 379,000 this year. That has occurred even though Fox’s overall audience in prime time is up this year, to 2.02 million from 1.89 million three years ago.
To which I added:
It would certainly be ironic if the network’s own downfall was not because of its outrageous propaganda, hate mongering or distortions but because the age of its own fans did it in.

A couple of years ago when Fox hosted the Republican presidential primary debate, they had a gay soldier Skype in to ask a question and the minute he said he was a gay soldier in Iraq the entire audience booed him and the candidates just stood there in abject silence. It was disgusting and so outrageous. The following day
CNN, MSNBC reported it and showed video and I read about it in USA Today, too. But Fox “News” failed to give it any mention, of course. So, that is a big part of the problem, how they cherry-pick their stories and another is that it seems that every day of the week they must pass out a sort of “outrage of the day” meme because it’s ALWAYS something. They’re ALWAYS “outraged” about something. They are so ridiculous. I would be embarrassed to tell anybody I followed it, but their viewers are proud and ignorant.
The articles below are rather interesting.. both from the last couple of days. They truly are disgusting and so such a disservice to the public and their viewers, especially. I do think over time more and more people are catching on and it’s only going to get worse for them. Sometimes I think they’re actually helping the other side by being so outrageous and ridiculous. They are a JOKE.
I was thinking something very similar and that these older people who grew up in a different time when their prejudice was practically ingrained into them because that is what society was like back then and that it is very hard to change, particularly the older people get because, well, we all know the clichés (which are accurate otherwise they wouldn’t be cliché) about how old people hate change and the old “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” saying.
And when I realized just how bad their ratings were with the younger people compared to the other networks, that Fox News was in trouble. Though while I can understand why there is a 25-54 demographic, I am not precisely sure why they don’t just make it an 18-54 demographic. I am guessing it is because 18-24 year olds must poll much differently than people who are 25 or 30. However, of course an 18-24 demographic is going to poll far differently than 44-54 year olds.
I also think, despite the flaws I see in this younger generation, it would feel petty of me to make the traditional statements each generation makes about how horrible the next generation or the generation after that is based on their attitude and behaviors. It seems to have become a sort of rite of passage at this point for old people to view younger people in that way. However, while some of their critiques are accurate (like my statement about the flaws I see in the younger generation) in areas regarding courteousness and civility or lack of respect to authority (I am only 30, so, if I am wrong, feel free to let me know). However, despite this lack of courteousness or respect for authority these younger generations don’t have, I feel almost all younger generations regardless of what decade they lived in, have gone through that stage that starts to take place in teenagers and almost all young people have in their teenage to early 20s.
Despite this, the thing the younger generations are starting to have more of or have embraced seems to be tolerance for people who are different. Now, while things still aren’t really near where they should be, the younger generations have made a lot of progress in the quest for tolerance and acceptance of other peoples’ lifestyles and ideas and beliefs. Of course, because of this, they will pass this down onto their children, and so forth and people will start to be much more accepting and tolerant of difference.
Anyway, I digress.
To the point of Fox News, as I said, I’ve been thinking this for awhile now about Fox News and how the age range of its viewers and their intolerant behaviors are going to start to disappear.
However, I have also over the last couple of years I have noticed an attempt to hang onto and bring back some of the younger viewers they have lost. Unfortunately, consider Fox News seems to just be the propaganda arm of the republican party, which in itself is starting to really fall out of touch with the majority of people in this nation, which of course hurts Fox News and their credibility when they try to spin and convince legislative policies that are becoming less and less popular with the majority of the people in this nation, including many citizens who may have always leaned to the right, start to lean in the other direction as the republican party continues to be the obstructionist party and no longer seems to stand for the values of the party they once knew.
I pretty much think Fox News ratings will depend on how well the republican party performs and if they lose popularity, I think the network will.
Lastly, its funny, because as I was writing that last paragraph, I turned on the television and there was Megan Kelly starting her show. And what was it about? Of course: “Obamacare.” I just wonder what kind of “news network” just continues to focus on one single issue pretty much 24-7. I mean, if all I watched was Fox News and didn’t know any better and believed everything I was seeing, I’d be angry too.
It’s a joke. Sometimes I am not sure which news shows are more comedic: The Daily Show w/ John Stewart and The Colbert Report or Fox News’s Sean Hannity or Megan Kelly.
But that’s only what “some people say”. Not me.
Viewers 65 and older are toxic to advertising agencies. They prefer 25-54 age group when placing ads in various media outlets.
The problem with these Fox “News” frauds is their anchors and hosts are aging. Billy and Hannocchio are too old to attract a younger audience. If the Fox “News” executive staff had any intelligence-which they don’t-they would have retired these two grandpas and replaced them with younger hosts.
Being number one in the ratings don’t mean crap to these agencies. Their job is to sell a product for their clients. If the agencies fail to generate an increase in numbers for their clients, they are fired.
NOTE TO FOX “NEWS” SUIT RITTENBERG
You can always sell assistant living residential areas to the 65+ viewers of Fox “News” Channel.
They mostly believe the far right’s garbage, make all the same excuses, and still cling to the same sorry excuses for why they think Republicans are always right, and everyone who disagrees with them is always wrong.
The damage is done.
IMHO, the hope for this nation is that the hatred, racism and bigotry of this nation resides mostly in those solidly of ‘Social Security’ age. My most fervent hope is that I live beyond their time. Hopefully, they won’t ignorantly destroy what is left of a once wonderful, tolerant nation before their ticket expires.
