We Desperately Need The Media To Investigate Trump’s Ties To Russia And Other Murky Business Dealings

There are many disturbing hints about Donald Trump’s ties to Russia that could seriously call into question whether America’s interests are in conflict with Trump’s business interests.

The Washington Post reported last week that, according to a senior Russian diplomat, “Russian government officials conferred with members of Donald Trump’s campaign team.” The Trump campaign has denied it. But the article reminds us that we’ve got plenty of reasons to be concerned:

Speculation has swirled about Trump’s links to Russia since early in the campaign, both because of his warm words about Putin and past business ventures in Russia. It is not clear whether Trump has any investments in the country, because he has not released any tax records.

But he made millions of dollars by taking the Miss Universe pageant to Moscow in 2013. Wealthy Russians also have been an important source of investments in Trump’s businesses. His son Donald Trump Jr. said in 2008 that “Russians make up a pretty disproportionate cross-section of a lot of our assets,” adding that “we see a lot of money pouring in from Russia.” (The emphases are mine.)

And that’s not the only chumminess between Trump and Russia noted in the article.

Furthermore, as I wrote last week in a post for Liberal America, Russia’s Duma not only openly broke into applause at the news of Trump's election but an advisor to Russian president Vladimir Putin publicly hinted he helped make that happen. “Maybe we helped a bit with WikiLeaks,” Sergei Markov, a pro-Kremlin political analyst, reportedly said.

Esquire’s Charles P. Pierce also sees a dire need for Trump’s ties to Russia to be fully investigated:

Why in Christ’s sweet name isn’t this thundering through the news cycle right now? Why aren’t hundreds of national-security reporters all over it? We have elected a guy who may well have traded what little integrity he has to a vicious autocrat and his thieves-in-law … We know he can’t get a loan from most American banks, so he has to go overseas for a lot of his financing. What banks is he tied into, and are any of those banks tied into the Russian government? Whom does he owe and how much does he owe them? And how do they plan to collect?

As disturbing as all that is, Pierce reminds us this is only part of an “unprecedented tangle of shadowy business dealings that will follow” Trump into the White House. Pierce notes that Trump is a defendant in “75 different lawsuits of assorted kinds.” He’s “toting a huge amount of baggage into the Oval Office and each piece of it contains a ticking time-bomb,” Pierce adds.

This is serious stuff. We need to know it all and we need to know it now, before Trump takes office.

Perhaps the only thing we can be sure of in the wake of Donald Trump’s election is that Trump will team up with his Fox News cheerleaders to put a shine on everything he does and says. We can also pretty much count on the two to demonize (or worse) those who dare to get under Trump’s very thin skin.

That’s all the more reason why the truth must come out as soon as possible.

Surely, SURELY, Trump’s finances should not need to be investigated now, but fully disclosed by him and his people. Every other civilised country keeps a detailed, regularly updated registry of elected politicians’ assets and liabilities. This is essential to avoid conflicts of interests or even the slightest suspicion of such.

A ‘blind trust’ is just that – all assets must be either liquidated and the funds managed by an unrelated entity bound by law not to disclose anything to the beneficiary OR the assets are passed over intact to the trustee, who is thereafter entitled to conduct business on behalf of the individual concerned – buying, selling and trading as they see fit, once again without the beneficiary being informed.

Trump’s notion of passing control to his children, who would without doubt keep him fully informed and do exactly as he instructed (under pain of disinheritance!) just does not cut the mustard.

There are too many unanswered questions about Trump and this elections and. Why does Trump refuse to show his taxes? Why did he block his own staff from doing opposition research on him? What’s he hiding that he didn’t want his own staff to know about? Why did Trump refuse to acknowledge a bipartisan intelligence briefing which concluded Russia was attempting to interfere with the election?
Now the Obama administration is reviewing the Democratic Coalition’s investigative report highlighting ten “clear links” the FBI failed to investigate on Trump’s business ties to Russia.
The Dworkin Report shows that Trump has incorporated almost 250 registered businesses in Russia.
This directly contradicts Trump’s prior statements about having no business ties to Russia. (Source: http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/us_5825e308e4b0852d9ec214c2).
The questions keep coming: Comey went against the wishes of the DOJ to present a vague letter to Congress, knowing full well it would possibly affect the election. And why was it perfectly acceptable to have wiki-leaks shoved down our throats every single day.
Trump himself was so vehemently adamant that the election was rigged, I almost got the impression he knew something the rest of us didn’t.
I’m thankful President Obama and Joe Biden are taking a closer look at this report by the Democratic Coalition. The American people deserve to be assured that they weren’t screwed by corrupt forces behind this election.

I agree, Ellen. So, “60 Minutes”, instead on doing an interview with Trump, how about you investigate him, those who surround him and his company/loans, etc.? Better late than never because the folks deserve hearing the truth about Trump and his dishonest ways. But I suppose that’s probably asking too much of you as money and access, um, trump the actual investigative journalism that your show used to be noted for doing.

I think the republicans might be scared of Trump’s supporters. Remember if he were to get impeached, we’d be stuck with Pence.

If Trump is not a rubber stamp for Paul Ryan, these things will get investigated. If all of a sudden Trump is investigated because he didn’t jump through Paul Ryan’s hoops democrats should point that out too. Trump is a two edged sword. He has plenty of vulnerabilitys but they aren’t brought to light. And we stand helpless on the sidelines of the impending train wreck.

Manly man Putin will get paid with interest. The interest being the unopposed annexation of the Ukraine, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia into the new Russian empire.
