Another night of Republian speeches. Anyone hear John McCain? The two teleprompter readers just now? Coming up: Paul Ryan. Share your thoughts in our comments section.

Thanx doors, CR was talking about living in “jim crow” [sic… so touching] Birmingham as a child when her parents were unable to take her to the cinema because they were black. Although she’d have been 6-8 years old during the early years of desegregation, I still think it’s more likely her parents had more lofty ambitions for their daughter: by all accounts, CR is a fine pianist and I can’t help wishing she’d opted for a concert career. Won’t be rooting for her as Senator or anything else any time soon.
Just noticed that I’d garbled my sentence with regard to the two families that had given “two” presidents to the USA, namely the Adams and the Bushes. The second “two” somehow got lost by the wayside. Rove was positively beaming with contentment for this evidence of regality (dynasty).

Bemused, Rice will be 58 in November. She like I live in California and the California Republican Party is hoping to convince her to run for Governor in two years since they have no one that seems to have any chance in our dark blue state and feel her name recognition will be their only hope.
I think she blew her chance a couple of years ago to run for the Senate seat now held by Barbara Boxer who at the time could have been beaten if the Râs selected a moderate or someone like Rice who is no moderate but a name that many undecided and independent voters were familiar with, even if she was associated with Bush. Instead they nominated former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina who was your typical greedy America CEO, with outsourcing and layoffs while collecting a lot of bonus candy for herself.

Forgot to say that I share Truman’s fear. It’s ironic that the land that claims to have practically invented the principle of universal access to opportunity as opposed to privilege should be so eager to defend the interests of the wealthy and the powerful . Rove was positively seraphic in noting that only two families had given the country a president: the Adams and the Bushes. Diagnosis: royal family syndrome.
NEWS ALERT: they’re talking about Isaac after over an hour, I’m off.

Have been watching “happening now” for about an hour in hope of getting an update on that storm that’s raging in Louisiana and points northwards: nothing, zilch, it doesn’t exist.
Also, no sign of anything that’s not been a frisky, bubbly, rah-rah-siss-bum-bah, for the republicans, including an impressive array of old farts who were dissing each other only a couple of weeks ago. I’m sure their coverage of the democratic convention will be detached, professional, i.e. proof positive that FNC is nowhere near being fair and balanced.
A query: how old is Condolezza Rice? Could she have been old enough to want to go to the white-folks’ cinema during segregation? I smell a ploy intended to humanize her as well. Anyway, the best movies always showed first at the cinemas on the other side of the tracks. I was too young to care much but heard neighbours complaining.
A second query: is it normal for each and every speaker to spill some personal beans as proof that they’re only one of the boys or gals? It’s getting a bit cloying.

Could be wrong, but methinks that this won’t be a marriage made in heaven between generations. If they’re elected (which I actually doubt), renovation of the Oval Office will have to include some pretty serious sound-proofing and sound-blocking devices any time Ryan comes to visit. Catholics and Mormons have always been like oil and water and
I was raised a Catholic and Ryan’s talk scared the living bejezus out of me. Scripted and reading off teleprompters to R and L (like watching spectators at a tennis match). Speculating on the basis of certain words he used, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to hear that his writers belonged to one of the many splinter fundamentalist groups. Current upheavals within the Vatican reveal an intense intestinal battle for dominance between them and the reasonable elements within the hierarchy: a nest of vipers should give the idea and it makes for some very interesting Vatican-watching.
IMO, “coverage” of the convention by FNC belongs to the cheerleading category of pseudo journalism; F&B? No way. Will be watching the Dem convention closely to compare before deciding.

McCain is one scary ol’ bastard. Wants the US in a perpetual war with Islamic nations. And all under the banner of “American Exceptionalism”. Most of the nutters who believe that crap can’t even spell the word.

If Ryan’s Medicare plan is so great, why is he waiting until 2023 to implement it?

Condi Rice, the one who ignored the warnings about 9/11, is going to attack Obama as not being sharp enough about national security. Oh, yeah, and she had a little something to do with a war under false pretenses in Iraq.

To put it politely, Mike Huckabee came off as uninspriring. That was awful.

Mike Huckabee should be ashamed of himself. What a disgusting speech. And it’s even more disturbing that Fox News let him make it.

Of course, nothing says “fair and balanced” like having one of your news hosts speak at the Republican convention.

Mike Huckabee just told an offensive joke about Debbie Wasserman Schultz making “an awful noise” in the next hotel room, as she was practicing for her upcoming speech at the DNC convention.
