I’ve already written about how comically awful Greta Van Susteren’s hour-long “Meet the Trumps” infomercial was last night. But the "Who Is Melania Trump?" segment was so especially terrible, it deserves a closer look.
There are many questions I suspect viewers have about the third Mrs. Trump, including the raunchy GQ photo of her posing in a thong, with a gun, that has recently resurfaced on the internet, raising questions of a double standard for First Ladies.
But I’m willing to bet that the number of languages Melania Trump speaks is not first and foremost on anyone’s mind. Other than the fawning Van Susteren’s. After some presidential music at the beginning, her first question was, “Here’s the question I’ve wanted to ask you for a long time. How many languages do you speak?”
After nearly a full minute on this topic, Van Susteren moved on to ask, “When you were a little kid, I take it you never thought, as a child, that some day you might be the First Lady of the United States?”
Gee, Greta, ya think?
“I didn’t think about that, no,” Trump predictably replied. That gave her the opening to recount her “beautiful childhood” and successful modeling career. She concluded with her decision to move to the U.S. and get a green card.
“You came here legally,” Van Susteren made a point of underscoring. “I take it that’s a big deal to you.”
“It is a big deal because you follow the law,” Trump said. “You obey the law and I think other people should do that, too.”
Well, except for the "mobsters, swindlers and crooks" her husband has palled around with, apparently. But, of course, Van Susteren didn’t mention them.
Melania Trump has dual citizenship now, she said, but in response to another hard-hitting question, she revealed that when she travels, she does so with an American passport.
Donald Trump’s treatment of women, immigrants, his temperament, (ill) preparedness for the White House and other serious questions - including his mob ties - are all matters that Melania Trump would have an up-front view of that could have proved enlightening. Furthermore, I think viewers deserve to know what kind of First Lady she’d be beyond what passport she uses and how many languages she speaks. What issues matter most for her? Which would she hope to address as First Lady, should she get the opportunity to do so?
It speaks volumes about both Trump and Van Susteren that none of those questions were asked or answered.
Instead, we got, “What magazines have you been on the cover of?”
“Oooh, many,” Trump replied.
“Like?” Van Susteren prodded. We saw a slide show of some of Mrs. Trump's covers. But nothing raunchy, of course. “Which is the top one? Is it Vogue?” Van Susteren pressed.
Move over, Sarah Palin. Van Susteren has a new Republican woman to drool over. And Melania Trump seems to have just the same level of ignorance as Van Susteren's last girl crush.
