In the Fox News sour grapes, foreign policy department, Fox News contributor John Bolton (unidentified as an advisor to Mitt Romney) visited the Happening Now show to discuss, what host Jenna Lee uncritically quoted as his statement that "our adversaries are breathing a sigh of relief" over the re-election of President Obama. They both forgot to point out that our allies did, too.
Instead, armchair general John Bolton went on fomenting for war against Iran:
They've sized up President Obama during his first term. They've seen he's a weak, inattentive leader... They see a president who doesn't really concern himself with foreign affairs, who doesn't see, for example, Iran's continuing progress toward nuclear weapons as the threat that it is.
Lee listened sympathetically. She never noted that the president who "doesn't really concern himself with foreign affairs" has ended the war in Iraq, is working to end the war in Afghanistan, has decimated the leadership of Al Qaeda and, of course, killed Bin Laden. Instead, in a blatant attempt to egg on Bolton about Iran, she asked what he would advise Obama to do.
Obama, for four years, has held to the illusion that he can negotiate with Iran and somehow stop that nuclear threat. He has precious little time left if any, really, to try and change course.
Bolton has been clamoring for war against Iran since the George W. Bush presidency. And yet he never spent a day putting his own fanny in a military uniform, much less on the line in the kind of war he wants other people to fight and die in.
Seeing as The Talking Toilet Brush is a Romney advisor, that’s one MORE reason to be glad Rmoney isn’t going to the White House.
I wonder if The Walrus thinks our adversaries are breathing a sign of relief now, as much as they did when he openly supported a known terrorist organization:
Bolton has long spoken in favor of the People’s Mujahedin of Iran (also known as the Mujahedin-e Khalq, or MEK), “an armed Islamic group with Marxist leanings” which has long been on the U.S. State Department list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations. According to the State Department, the MEK “[f]ollow[s] a philosophy that mixes Marxism and Islam.” In the 1970s, MEK members, who “had been trained by the Soviet Union in guerilla warfare and supported Khomeini . . . assassinated U.S. military officers then working in Iran. MEK members actively took part in the 1979 seizure of the U.S. embassy in Tehran, according to a U.S. government report.”
On January 25, 2011, Bolton drew a standing ovation at a Brussels conference in support of the MEK, giving a speech in which he “backed MEKâs legitimacy, and the notion of removing it from the list of terrorist organizations.” Georgetown law professor David D. Cole has pointed out that “the United States government has labeled the Mujahedeen Khalq a ‘foreign terrorist organization,’ making it a crime to provide it, directly or indirectly, with any material support [including] engag[ing] in public advocacy to challenge a groupâs ‘terrorist’ designation,” under the Supreme Court’s 2010 decision in Holder v. Humanitarian Law Project.
