As the mouthpiece for the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, Fox News has been stalwart in its validation of the bishops' opposition to the contraception mandate in the Affordable Care Act - the bishops' views on poverty and immigration, not so much. And owing to their lawsuit against this mandate, the Little Sisters of the Poor have become poster children for Fox News to use as a means to reinforce the Catholic right wing and GOP narrative that Pres. Obama hates the one true Fox church. (Roger Ailes' Catholic wife is a big award winning Catholic fund raiser.) So who better to reinforce this message, in a fair & balanced way than a Catholic priest. And while Father Gerald Murray doesn't get the Fox face time that Fox first stringer Fr. Jonathan Morris gets, he is every bit as ideological and partisan as Morris. Last Wednesday, the non-partisan (just kidding) Jeanine Pirro provided Murray with a pulpit from which to preach the Fox gospel of hate.

In an interview with Piers Morgan last night, author Gabriel Sherman gave some fascinating insights into just how Roger Ailes uses Fox News as a political messaging tool. Ailes’ own politics are “quite extreme,” according to Sherman. But, as a “brilliant political strategist,” he has worked through moderates to win elections. That’s why he has used Fox to take the side of Mitt Romney and Chris Christie, despite his own personal distaste for them.

In case you missed it, Bill O’Reilly engaged in a rather contentious debate with Fox News contributor Mary Katharine Ham last week over the legalization of marijuana. O’Reilly accused Ham of “babbling” as she tried to explain why she thinks pot should be legalized. Last night, she was back for Round Two. O'Reilly continued attacking her unfairly.

Megyn Kelly has gone from showcasing guests who want to impeach President Obama to blatantly advocating for it. And not just to any guest but to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

On Your World, Fox News’ supposed business show, Fox News contributor Dr. Ben Carson described the Affordable Care Act (“ObamaCare”) as “the most massive tax increase in the history of America, probably the history of the world, and it’s all being done under the covers.” The only problem? It’s not true. But host Neil Cavuto did not correct the falsehood. In fact, he seemed to approve of it.

While Fox News, as the mouthpiece for the radical misogynist right, claim that there is no war on women, the commentary on the network for real men would seem to indicate otherwise. For example, Fox's "libertarian" John Stossel seems to have some issue when it comes to women as shown by his rant about how, because women are hypochondriacs, there should be no gender equality in health care. In a segment on last week's Fox & Friends (1/9), he promoted the right wing meme that poor, single women are really, really stupid because they allow themselves to be lured by the siren song of government "handouts" which we all know are so lucrative! So rather than address the greed and criminal excesses of Wall Street and corporate America, Stossel chose to beat up on poor, single women on "welfare" - a word that acts as a loud and penetrating racist dog whistle to Fox's "real" American audience. 

Roger Ailes doesn't just run Fox News as a political enterprise. He tried to do the same thing in his weekend community of Garrison, New York. Unfortunately for him, it didn't work out quite so well.
