Mike Huckabee's "Historian" Pal, David Barton, Under Fire For Historical Inaccuracy

Posted by Priscilla -26.60pc on August 17, 2012 · Flag

Mike Huckabee once said that he wished that every American could be forced to listen to the message of radical Christian nationalist "historian," David Barton, whose bizarre and inaccurate revisionist history of the US includes the myth that the Founders were fundamentalist Christians (Enlightenment? What Englightenmen!) who sought to create a country based on biblical principals. (And did ya know that they opposed the teaching of evolution and that the Revolution was all about ending slavery?). He has been denounced by reality based historians for years but his reputation is now even further sullied - but ya probably won't hear anything about it from Mike Huckabee!

Not only has Barton, who has an undergrad degree from Oral Roberts and an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from Pensacola Christian College, been criticized by his fellow Christian conservatives but now, his book, "The Jefferson Lies," has been pulled by Thomas Nelson, the world's largest Christian publisher. (You know it's got to be bad when this publisher has no problem with books by John Hagee and Michael Savage.) Barton's book, which whitewashes Jefferson's racism, was even protested by some Cincinnati evangelical pastors (both black and white) who threatened to boycott Nelson. Basically, as noted in a book which counters Barton's claims, the book is full of historical shit. The Daily Beast has a good summary.

David Barton and Glenn Beck are busy trying to turn deists into theist while the completely ignore professed Christians, who were mutilated and killed for their faith, people who believed in a secular government. Men like John Leland and Roger Williams, the founders of the Baptist Faith in America. It is ironic how Glenn and David attack a secular Government with religious syncretism. It is hypocritical as well. I challenge all Christians to learn about Roger Williams and John Leland. This is a truth that needs to be perpetuated.

Ignorance, confirmation bias, availability heuristic, Barnum Effect, internal “yes-man”, reality tunnel, and Texas Sharpshooter Fallacy, are all facts of life and thriving elements of a healthy democracy

Visitor 55, you seem uncertain and tentative in your criticism of Barton. Why not speak out and don’t be so shy.

Average American patriot – You are more creative and explicit with your words than I. Well said.

Barton has been thoroughly debunked. If you support his claims you have not researched the topic very well.

Fortunately for Goober the Huckster, his loyal audience is three stages past brain-dead.
