Live Blogging South Carolina Republican Debate

Posted by Ellen -385.80pc on January 16, 2012 · Flag

Watch the South Carolina Republican presidential candidates' debate and the analysis with us. Share your thoughts, observations and comments about the debate and the media coverage. Starting at 9 PM ET.

I'm interested to see how the candidates behave toward each other. Will there be a Bain attack? Will Mitt Romney try to defend his record as a "vulture" capitalist? Where will Ron Paul fit in all this?

Grab the popcorn and pull up a chair!

I was posting in the comments but I think I'll start posting here.

10 PM Here we go again

10:06 PM Paul asks why we didn't try to get information from Bin Laden instead of just killing him. Crowd boos. Gingrich talks up killing enemies and the crowd cheers.

10:06 Paul suggests "golden rule" in nations and the crowd boos.

10:07 Paul: This nation doesn't need another war. The crowd sheers.

10:14 Perry: Obama's foreign policy alienates our allies and emboldens our enemies.

10:14 Here comes Perry saying Obama has "disdain for our country" over reaction to marines urinating on dead.

10:17 Romney getting booed for supporting the latest detainee detention act.

10:31 Gingrich and Santorum debate Social Security. Fairly substantive.

10:34 Social issues up next.

10:39 Williams asked Romney about his "varmint" hunting. Romney admits he's not much of a hunter... after saying he hunted moose, oops, elk recently.

10:51 Debate over. Hannity next!

Here are previous comments:

“Only the elites despise earning money,” Gingrich.

Gingrich defending his Janitorial work for poor kids.

Juan Williams asking about the DREAM Act… Romney ducking.

Santorum is nailing Romney on restoring voting rights to felons.

Paul’s funny line: His only regret about negative ads is that he didn’t have enough time to get everything he wanted in about Santorum’s record.

Here’s Romney’s “I feel your pain” moment.

Perry asked Romney to release his tax returns and crowd cheers.

Romney said he “turned around tough situations.”

Here we go! First question to Newt Gingrich on the Romney attacks – which I think Gingrich dodged. Baier now following up.

Tough crowd. The Mitt and Ronny received boos from the audience. We can’t wait until election day.

BabySpittle, no and those are excellent points.

When you say the “debate” on social security was “fairly substantive”, does that mean they showed command of the facts?

Such as social security being able to pay full benefits for 30 years and 75% benefits until 2070.

Or that any issues with social security could be addressed by removing the $97k income cap.

Jeff Lunt wrote: If the Fed gets out of directing public Ed, and the states give up control to cities and towns (as Newt said to huge applause), how will the conservatives mandate prayer in school, require teaching creationism, and keep birth control info (other than abstinence) out of the classroom?

So true! They’ll have to turn the schools over to Focus on the Family!

Hey at least one mention of fox being “fair and balanced” (well knowing fair and balanced), Is that the first so far, or have they done it more during the debate and post-debate coverage?

I think we have the making of an Emmy and an Oscar and Platinum straight to Beta here.

“When gNOpigs go Porcine-vores”

The gNOpig ass clown car is loosing more wheels with Mittens at the steering wheel.

Because he is the sane one. The Moderate.

Frank Luntz thinks Gingrich won, predicts Gingrich will rise in polls.

My feeling is nobody did anything to stop Romney.

Fox asked its viewers to tweet “answer” or “dodge.” Hahaha!

Romney got the most “dodged” votes via Twitter.

Oh, those AWFUL SuperPacs! Don’t you feel sorry for these candidates, being attacked by the others’ unaccountable SuperPacs? I eagerly await the GOP push to eliminate them. (Snark)

@Ed…I agree that Jaun has been alone in that dept. He really gets booed for much of it, too. It might not have been as loud if Cain was on the stage.

The telegraph (via a comment by a BBC reporter friend of the bloggers I guess) point out how Fox News has Juan Williams asking all the questions involving race…

Santorum’s support for restoring voting rights to felons who have done their time probably lost him some significant votes. He is proud that this bill is a response to the disporportionate number of blacks convicted over whites. Conservatives perceive that blacks vote for liberals. Why would they want to give more blacks the right to vote?

Thanks for watching and providing updates, Ellen. I can’t watch the neocon pigs. All they do is lie during the entire clown show. They make me want to puke.
