Now that Donald Trump did not go down in flames in the presidential debate last night, his conservative Christian running mate, Mike Pence, has decided it’s OK to remain connected to the guy who was just shown on tape boasting, ”Grab them by the p---y. You can do anything” to women when you’re a star.
As the “Grab them by the p***y scandal rocked the Trump campaign and prompted calls for him to withdraw from the race, rumors swirled that Pence might quit. Pence had said about the Trump tape, “I do not condone his remarks and cannot defend them.”
But today, Pence put those rumors to bed, at least for the time being. And, of course, he got a warm assist from Fox News’ Fox & Friends.
Before Pence had even answered a question, the lower-third banner read, “GOV PENCE PRAISES TRUMP’S DEBATE PERFORMANCE.”
Cohost Brian Kilmeade asked about a local headline saying, “Mike Pence is waiting for the outcome of the second presidential debate to decide if he’ll dump Trump or not.”
Pence shook his head as Kilmeade spoke. “That’s absolutely false,” Pence said. “The real story this morning is that Donald Trump stepped up and won a debate last night that seemed to be against all odds. He stepped up, he showed humility, he showed strength, he expressed genuine contrition for the words that he had used on the video that became public, and then he moved directly into the choice that the American people are facing, and it is such a dramatic choice and I thought before the end of that 90 minutes, the American people could see the opportunity that we really have to change the direction of this country.”
Pence added, “I’m just proud of the job he did, proud of my running mate and looking forward to being on the campaign trail today.”
Pence, who describes himself as “a Christian, a conservative and a Republican, in that order,” said nothing about Trump’s predatory behavior toward Clinton in the debate, nor his ridiculous claim, “Nobody has more respect for women than I do,” Trump said. Nor did any of his Fox Friends.
“I’m proud to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with him,” Pence said about his running mate.
By the way, two polls show Clinton won the debate last night: 57-34% from CNN, and 47-42% from YouGov.
