The right wing love Israel because of its biblical connections. But they are certainly not attuned to Jewish sensitivities as seen in their callous comparison of right wing issues to Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. Fox News hosts provide examples of this insensitivity. When, at a Values Voters Summit, Mike Huckabee compared abortion to the Holocaust, the ADL described his remarks as "offensive" and "disturbing." The ADL condemned his comparison of the Holocaust to the national debt, at a NRA gathering, as a "political talking point." The ADL also called out Fox's Andrew Napolitano's column in which he suggested that if the Jews in the Warsaw ghetto had enough guns, some could have survived. This type of right wing commentary was recently advanced, by the alleged fair & balanced "news" host Martha MacCallum, on her alleged "news" show when she said that if only the Jews had guns, things would have worked out so much better.
On January 16th, Martha MacCallum hosted liberal Jehmu Greene and conservative radio host Mike Slater for a discussion of Harvey Weinstein's planned movie about the NRA which, according to Weinstein, will be a very harsh take on this organization. MacCallum and Slater claimed that Weinstein is a hypocrite because of all the violent movies which he has produced. When the conversation turned to the Newtown massacre, MacCallum pushed the NRA argument that if only somebody with a gun had been able to shoot Adam Lanza everything would have been hunky-dory because what ends all or most shootings is "when there is a gun introduced into the situation that scares that person into stopping what they are doing."
She saved the best for last. After she noted that Weinstein, during an interview with Howard Stern, said that Jews could have "stopped the Holocaust." FACT CHECK - Weinstein said that gun ownership would be justified “when you’re marching a half of a million people into Auschwitz" and that if there were another Holocaust, “I’d find a gun if that was happening to my people." He didn't say that the Holocaust could have been stopped. MacCallum ended with the "historically inaccurate" and "offensive" NRA talking point: "Well, I guess he’s forgetting the fact that their guns were all confiscated under German law at the time."
The next day, the ADL issued a statement in which they condemned those media outlets which were making the same argument made by MacCallum. Their words say it best:
"Another historically inaccurate analogy suggests that if those who perished under the Nazis had better access to guns, the regime would not have been able to systematically murder so many Jews and others. For example, in response to Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop’s efforts to improve gun safety in December 2013, NRA board member Scott Bach said, “…if you’re going to be a Jersey City mayor you have to by default be anti-gun…His grandparents were Holocaust survivors according to Wikipedia. So you’ve got to wonder why he is not getting it.”
It must be noted that the small number of personal firearms in the hands of the small number of Germany’s Jews (about 214,000) remaining in Germany in 1938 could in no way have stopped the totalitarian power of the Nazi German state. When they had weapons, Jews could symbolically resist, as they did in the 1943 Warsaw Uprising and elsewhere, but could not stop the Nazi genocide machine. Gun control did not cause the Holocaust; Nazism and anti-Semitism did."
Not according to the "fair & balanced" Martha MacCallum!
