Jon Stewart briefly took over The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last night and delivered just the kind of hilarious takedown of Donald Trump and his biggest on-air supporter, Sean Hannity, that we’ve all been jonesing for this campaign season. With bonus digs at Roger Ailes!
Stewart just shredded Hannity, now nicknamed “Lumpy,” for supporting Donald Trump when he represents so much Hannity has attacked Barack Obama for, these past eight years.
The segment was such perfect Stewart comedy that you have to see it to get its full meaning, impact and enjoyment. But, as usual, Stewart had a serious message to impart and I’ll quote that, via Media Matters:
STEWART: Either Lumpy and his friends are lying about being bothered by thin-skinned, authoritarian, less-than-Christian readers-of-prompter being president. Or they don’t care, as long as it’s their thin-skinned prompter-authoritarian-tyrant-narcissist. You just want that person to give you your country back. Because you feel that you’re this country’s rightful owners. There’s only one problem with that. This country isn’t yours. You don’t own it. It never was. There is no real America. You don’t own it. You don’t own patriotism. You don’t own Christianity. You sure as hell don’t own respect for the bravery and sacrifice of military, police and firefighters.
[...]
So, Lumpy, you and your friends have embraced Donald Trump. Clearly, the “c” next to your names don’t stand for “constitutional” or “conservative.” But “cravenly,” “convenient,” –
The only thing missing was Hannity’s support for right-wing, armed threats to law enforcers before he held himself up as a champion of them in order to smear Black Lives Matter supporters as enemies of the law.
But let’s hope Stewart gets to that and more sometime soon!
Meanwhile, watch it below, from the July 21 Late Night with Stephen Colbert and have some laughs at Hannity’s expense.
The shameful Dixie Chicks episode sure put paid to them country musos showing any dissent to the CHENEY/bush company line.
The transparent apologists dominating the Fox News payroll have always been easy marks for comedians like Colbert, Stewart, and Maher. But at least the Foxies had a core set of memes, as Stewart alludes to, masking much of their hypocrisy.
Trump has exploded all of that. As I mentioned earlier, everyone is talking about the death of the GOP ideology of past decades. [Pre-senile] Ronnie Raygun wouldn’t recognize the Trump-ified GOP. But the Foxies are like the delegates stuck with being bound to The Donald at #RNCinCLE. There is no escape except to jettison lifelong principles and spin to pretend you didn’t. Chomp down hard on your Trump s—t burger and act like it’s filet mignon, gang. 👍
I believe Hannity and the right wing are becoming increasingly restive after seeing what a mess the GOP convention became. Not to mention their unease at what is happening at Fox News now. If Hannity had not conducted himself in such a despicable manner over the past 20 years, I might even feel pity for him.
