What Megyn Kelly’s Bout With Newt Gingrich Reveals About The Bigger Fox News/GOP Picture

Underneath the sheer jaw-droppingness of Megyn Kelly’s confrontation with Newt Gingrich last night on The Kelly File, there are some significant indicators about the state of the 2016 race, Republicans and Fox News.

For one thing, Kelly clearly got the better of Gingrich and, by extension, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. Unlike the sugar-coating of and cheerleading for Trump’s campaign seen elsewhere on Fox, Kelly unambiguously painted him as a loser who has only himself to blame and in large part because he quacks like a serial sexual predator.

It’s not just a reflection of the deep divisions among conservatives in the age of Trump. It’s a reflection of the deep divisions at Fox News, as well. There couldn’t be a bigger contrast between Megyn Kelly and Sean Hannity, the prime time host who follows her. Hannity is so pro-Trump that he has turned off plenty of conservatives. That contrast just got a whole lot starker.

Also, Gingrich, who was under consideration as Trump’s VP pick (with some help from Hannity), is under contract with Fox. So Kelly did not just thumb her nose at the current head of the Republican Party but at her own colleague. Whatever her motives, she must believe her job is safe enough to go after and, frankly, disrespect an august Fox/Republican figure that the hosts still call “Mr. Speaker.”

Nothing says “on the way to has-been” than the kind of treatment Kelly felt free to shell out to Gingrich. Given that there has been tension between her and Hannity, too, recently, he’s got to be taking her treatment of Gingrich at least somewhat personally.

Then there’s the gender gap. Old man Gingrich thought he could pull a fast one pretending that 11 women accusing a presidential candidate of sexual assault and misconduct is no real biggie (though he was happy to impeach an actual president over consensual sex). Whatever else you think of what happened between Gingrich and Kelly, it’s safe to say his effort flopped.

Given Trump’s unpopularity with women, Gingrich’s spin seemed particularly out-of-touch. Even worse was his condescending accusation to Kelly, “You are fascinated with sex and you don’t care about public policy.” His attempt to bully her into calling Bill Clinton a sexual predator probably didn’t do much to bolster his female sensitivity bona fides either.

Before you get all dewy-eyed about Fox turning over a new leaf or conclude that Kelly has given up her old bias, consider this: Kelly’s contract is up in July and she has openly expressed an interest in moving beyond the partisan shoutfests that are Fox’s trademark. So this was probably at least as much about her own rebranding as Fox’s.

But will she stay and help steer Fox into a newer, fresher brand or go off on a different path? A recent article in Vanity Fair indicated she hasn’t made up her mind. For what it’s worth, I’m going to predict she leaves. And as if to prove me right, it was announced today that Kelly will cohost “Live with Kelly [Ripa]” on November 9, the day after the presidential election.

Meanwhile, Fox News 1.0 will be very much in view tonight when Gingrich appears on Hannity.

In case you missed Kelly vs. Gingrich last night or just want to see it again, you can watch it below, from the October 25, 2016 The Kelly File.

Bob Roberts,

I’m with you on this.

FTR, I didn’t say Clinton was impeached for sex. I said he was impeached “over” it.

Yes Bill Clinton was impeached for lying about sex. As a matter of fact, Bill Clinton is the only man in the whole recorded history of humanity to lie about sex.

Most right minded people see that as not worth impeaching a President over. It’s not like Bill Clinton lied this country into an unnecessary war. Now that’s worth impeaching a President over.

You don’t need to correct me because I didn’t say he was impeached for for the sex act. I do know he was impeached for lying about it. Newt Gingrich and numerous others were very excited to nail him about the sex. And I’m pretty sure not many of them would have admitted it, either. And yes I know lying to a congressional inquiry under oath is an impeachable offense. This was a very disturbing time for the public as well.

A slight correction – Bill Clinton was impeached for perjury regarding that consensual sex. Fooling around in the White House is not an impeachable offense, lying about it is.

I said a couple of months ago that after the Ripa/Strahan mess and the attacks on Ripa about not being a team player and acting like a prima donna, that ABC will make a big money offer to Megyn and give her the Live show, dumping Ripa in the process. With this news, I see it as a tryout. I’m sticking with my earlier prediction.

My eye sees this as who is loyal to Don the Con. I see Newt Gingrich as a mark and Megyn Kelly as not a mark. Good for Megyn. If Donald Trump is all about the money (I think he is), I predict he will leave the country for an indeterminate amount of time after the election.

I think there are republicans who think like me and may see this as a good way to filter the bad elements out of the republican party.

What’s weird is that in the near future, democrats may be snickering at the GOP and singing praises about Don the Con.

Fox made sure the numbers got out in order to frame her dismissal as a cost thing. They do not want to anyone to think her not pledging her allegiance to the republican candidate had anything to do with it.

For what it’s worth, Megyn Kelly is a registered “Independent”.

There was nothing newsworthy about this segment. It was salacious and clearly meant to be entertaining. With the possible exception of Baier and, to a lesser extent, Hume’s shows, the rest of the day on this network is now strictly entertainment. The medium used is a little different but the effect is the same. Both of these folks got what they wantred out of this segment — the chance to burnish themselves in the minds of their backers and make more money at their expense.

These knuckleheads just don’t know the difference between sex and sexual assault…. they just don’t fucking get it!

Hannity let him join the he-man woman haters cub long ago and had him on tonight. Beside the fact Gingrich had his own cheating going on during Bill’s impeachment, many others were outed about their own affairs. And when you see one cockroach, there are thousands you don’t see. He’s the sex obsessed one. Not that people never cheat or think about sex but he’s so ignorant to say Trump’s problems are about his love for women. MK has been ruthless in her coverage of any Democrats and she is ball-lessly playing high and mighty, bigly.
David Lindsay commented 2016-10-27 01:37:17 -0400 · Flag
Is this a great thing? Megyn Kelly continues on. No consequences. It would be great to have MK have to explain Newt and Ronnie Raygun. That there are no consequences.

Don’t trust these cocks*ckers.

Because of his blowup with Megyn, Newt had his appearance on Fox & Friends canceled this morning…https://www.yahoo.com/tv/newt-gingrich-kicked-off-fox-friends-guest-list-213509409.html

Blackroots Barbie wants the fame, respect and $ that go with a real news network gig.

Pig Newton will be taking inventory of his man-parts to ensure none got whacked off last night.
