On June 11, Priscilla reported that Laura Ingraham said that Plan B emergency contraception encourages rape and pedophilia. Last night, during her appearance on The O’Reilly Factor, Bill O’Reilly pretty much validated her wild-eyed craziness.
The following discussion about teen access to Plan B (mandated by a court order) took place between O’Reilly and Ingraham last night:
O’REILLY: This will lead to the rise in STDs, which is an epidemic not reported much by the media.
INGRAHAM: Right, huge.
O’REILLY: But it certainly will do that, because now kids will say, “Well you know if I have unprotected sex, I can get this little pill and pop it in, and I’m OK. So I won’t have the condom or I won’t protect myself,” and bang, you’re going to have another explosion as we already have in that area. …Statutory rape, obviously, you know, another thing that very underreported in this country, we don’t want to hear about it. Incest, same thing.
INGRAHAM: Yep, horrible.
O’REILLY: So it seems to me that President Obama had legitimate reasons for opposing the judge’s ruling which he did.
INGRAHAM: And they said we needed more studies. …We haven’t had any more studies on the effects, again, on very young girls.
O’REILLY: And then they spin...
INGRAHAM This is a fanatical adherence to this mantra that it’s “our bodies, ourselves.
But studies have shown that Plan B does not increase sexual activity among teens. And, as Priscilla noted, the FDA has established that Plan B is safe.
But instead of helping to fan the flames of hysteria, O’Reilly should have offered up a reality check. As Priscilla wrote:
While ideally, teens should be communicating with their parents, not all teens have the type of family structure or dynamics where that is possible. And the reality is that teens are having sex. But the idea that this “empowers” rapists is totally ludicrous given that men have been raping young girls for centuries - without the availability of Plan B. In other words, rapists are gonna rape, Plan B or no Plan B. Does Laura Ingraham actually think that the existence of Plan B will unleash a whole new crop of child abusers who, heretofore, were under control? I guess Ingraham doesn’t know that when women, who have been raped, go to hospital emergency rooms, they are offered Plan B - even in some Catholic hospitals. And does she actually believe that raped teens should give birth to their rapists’ babies?
Instead of pointing out any of those facts, O’Reilly helped promote unsubstantiated panic.
1) “O’REILLY: So it seems to me that President Obama had legitimate reasons for opposing the judge’s ruling which he did.”
Oh, you just know that HAD to hurt. O’Reilly’s actually praising something Obama did. (I wonder what he did after the show—go for the mouthwash or go for the soap?)
2) “Instead of pointing out any of those facts, O’Reilly helped promote unsubstantiated panic.”
And, in other late-breaking news, the sun comes up in the east, water is wet, and Francisco Franco is still dead. Since when does O’Reilly ever point out facts? If a fact ever comes out of O’Reilly’s mouth, it’s entirely by accident.
Well, yes, it is. Just who do you allow to speak for your body and ‘self’? I guessing that you feel proud to be an independent woman that has made her own ‘life’ decisions and decided for herself what is right, and what is wrong. What makes you think that you now have the right to make the same choices for anyone else?
