While Fox relentlessly attacks food stamps as some kind of evil, maybe they think the poor should make up the shortfall by selling their organs. That’s certainly what John Stossel seemed to suggest on Fox & Friends this morning when he argued for the privatization of organ donation – and ignored its disproportionate impact on the poor.
As part of a promo for a Stossel special called “Privatize Everything,” Stossel gushed – to supportive comments from the Curvy Couch Crew - about how efficient and innovative privatized services work.
“There are some things, though,” Steve Doocy said, “that should remain under the purview of the federal government.”
Not according to Stossel. He acknowledged that the Constitution says the post office, police, courts and military are government responsibilities. But, parks, libraries, law enforcement, military and organ selling, Stossel believes, should be private.
“Organ selling?” Doocy asked.
“This upsets people, but I’m upset it’s not legal,” Stossel said. “In the one country where it is legal, nobody waits for a kidney.” Where is that, he was asked? “I’m afraid to say it’s Iran,” Stossel continued. “But, still! There’s no waiting line. In America, lots of people die waiting for kidneys.”
“Interesting,” Elisabeth Hasselbeck said.
“So you think it should be legal in this country to sell off an organ you’re not using,” Doocy pressed.
“Yes, we have two kidneys, we need one, people need them,” the Fox Business host declared. “It’s your body, it should be your choice. Why does the government limit what you can do what you can do with your body?”
“Interesting,” Hasselbeck said again.
But as Raw Story noted (and Fox & Friends did not), A 2008 policy analysis published by the conservative Cato Institute pointed out that poor people are disproportionately impacted by the Iranian organ trade, which pays about $1,200 for each kidney.
And yet, as Priscilla pointed out to me in a behind-the-scenes email, Fox Newsies have no problem if the government gets between a woman and her body when it comes to reproductive and contraception rights.

Yeah, I can’t get through a discussion where China can come up that doesn’t have at least one Right Winger blowing that load, and saying that it’s a reason to fear them.
But I guess it’s ok for America.
