Here’s What Passes For A ‘Fair And Balanced’ Debate About Netanyahu, Obama And Israel

Yesterday, Fox host Uma Pemmaraju held what she called a “fair and balanced” debate about President Obama “reassessing” U.S. policy with Israel. Apparently, Pemmaraju’s idea of “fair and balanced” means peppering the debate with her own anti-Obama comments.

In her introduction, Pemmaraju said, “It’s the very latest in a very public rift between two world leaders and a major strain on a key relationship in the Middle East. Joining us now for a fair and balanced debate on the future of U.S. diplomacy in the Middle East: Fox News contributor Angela McGlowan and radio show host Mark Levine.”

But with Pemmaraju there, the discussion was anything but fair and balanced:

Her questions:

  • This has been like a soap opera. …Certainly, a lot of people taking notice about the diplomatic overtures that Mr. Netanyahu is making at the same the White House responds. Now, the bottom line is, Angela, that Mr. Netanyahu won a resounding victory and that this White House seems to continue to single him out as a bad boy and trying to issue ultimatums, if you don’t get in line, so to speak.
  • How do you know that he (Boehner) was using (Netanyahu’s address to the U.S. Congress) to embarrass this White House at a time when it’s a legitimate concern about Iran having nuclear weapons, the fact that negotiations are going on right now and Mr. Netanyahu is one of the few outspoken world leaders really going on the offensive, warning the world about a possible nuclear Iran?
  • Certainly, Netanyahu is enjoying a very big victory. And there is going to have to be some kind of a reset between the two leaders right now. The president still waited a few days before actually congratulating him, although British Prime Minister immediately called him and so did others. What does that serve, in terms of the optics on this and… in terms of how is this interpreted by those who are anti-Israel out there in the Middle East? When they want to be able to use this against Israel?
  • There were a lot of reports that there were operatives from the United States trying to disrupt that election… allegations tied to the White House, nothing proven, though. At this point, the fact that even that perception is out there. You know, the president said we don’t want to interrupt the protocols… in terms of the election coming up, that’s why I’m not gonna meet with (Netanyahu, when he came to Congress) and yet behind the scenes he is, you know, allegedly working behind the scenes to disrupt the elections.

Actually, the unproven allegation is not that Obama was trying to disrupt the election but help Netanyahu’s opponents win.

By the way, did Fox News respond with graciousness when Obama decisively won re-election in 2012? What do you think?

If only the rightwing thugs had recognized the resounding victory by Obama, not once but two times.
Nothing short of total contempt for American democracy deserving more than a passive response!
And who the fuck is Uma Pemmaraju?
