Yesterday, President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton landed some Super Bowl smack downs of Fox News. So today, Fox tried to wipe the egg off its face by claiming that Clinton’s viral tweet about Fox was really a put down of Obama. #NotTheOnion
As I previously posted, President Obama called out Fox News’ biased and distorted reporting, especially on Benghazi and the IRS, in a pre-Super Bowl interview with Bill O’Reilly. Even the positive coverage (and much was not positive) of O'Reilly's interview noted Obama's smackdowns. Later, Hillary Clinton tweeted during the Super Bowl game: “It’s so much more fun to watch FOX when it’s someone else being blitzed & sacked! #SuperBowl” That tweet now has over 56,000 retweets and more than 41,000 favorites.
Rather than just taking their social media lumps, Fox actually tried to argue that Clinton was referring to President Obama getting “blitzed & sacked,” presumably by O'Reilly, and not the Denver Broncos. Never mind that at the time of Clinton’s tweet, it was past halftime when the Broncos were down 22-0.
Even host Gretchen Carlson acknowledged that point on The Real Story today. But still, she asked, “So what exactly did the possible presidential contender actually mean?” in her tweet. She also acknowledged that Clinton was “obviously” taking a swipe at Fox. “Duh.” Then Carlson quickly added, “Let’s move on.” She meant, of course, "let's move on to something that makes a Democrat, not us, look bad."
Actually, I think Carlson only made herself - and Fox News - look worse. She asked the ridiculous question, “Who was (Clinton) actually talking about? Because nobody’s writing about that today! …I have the sneaking suspicion, Dee Dee that maybe she was talking about President Obama.”
It was absolutely President Obama. ‘Cause (Clinton’s) thinking she’s just getting, you know, destroyed all the time about Benghazi and this time he’s on the hot seat. And she’s thnking, ‘Hey!’ And she’s sitting back, watching the game, saying, ‘At least it’s not me.’ Now it will be. She can laugh now. And it may have been clever. But later, I mean, she’s going to be on the hot seat again.”
Mediaite also caught Fox & Friends making the same laughable argument this morning.
