Fox News guest Wayne Simmons didn’t just endorse torture, he talked as if it's one of the things that make America great.
On December 15th, Fox News’ Your World show hosted Simmons for what was clearly designed as a torture defense session. On Fox News, that also means portraying those who oppose it as somehow anti-American.
The booking of Simmons guaranteed a pro-torture narrative. But that wasn’t enough for the “fair and balanced” network.
In his introduction, host Neil Cavuto said, “What are we carrying on about? Well, how much we torture potential bad guys and not, former CIA operative Wayne Simmons says, how much they still want to kill us guys.”
Simmons told Cavuto, “As one of my very few heroes said the other night, Vice President Dick Cheney, when you’ve got the bad guy in front of you, what are you going to do? Ask him pretty, pretty, pretty please tell us what you know? No. We’re going to use enhanced interrogation techniques, and we are going to break him until we get that information.”
Cavuto respectfully acknowledged Sen. John McCain’s criticisms of torture but Cavuto framed the matter as if it were a debate over effectiveness rather than morality. Nor did he point out how Cheney shrugged off the death of an innocent detainee in CIA custody. In fact, Cavuto suggested torture critics enable our country’s enemies. He said, “It certainly shows a distraction on our part. With everything going on… anyone outside this country wishing us ill could look at that (criticism) and say, ‘God, they’re feeding on each other back in the United States. They’re easy pickin’s.’”
But Cavuto does not to have a problem with the “feeding on each other” that goes on regularly at Fox News where Americans, including our president, and American institutions are routinely smeared and demonized.
