That Fox News is closely allied with anti-abortion extremists was underscored, yet again, on this morning's alleged "news" show, "America Live." As official Fox Priest, Fr. Jonathan Morris, is attending a seminar, Martha MacCallum brought in Fr. Frank Pavone who is head of a radical group of celibate, Roman Collared guys whose sole mission is to eliminate abortion rights. Pavone, a supporter of anti-abortion domestic terrorist Randall Terry, was first embraced by Fox News during the Terri Schiavo media circus when Pavone was the "spiritual advisor" to the Schindler family. He has been interviewed, on Fox "News," about the state of the Catholic Church which he thinks is just dandy. He was Fox's go to guy for lies about how the Canadian health system was treating a terminally ill child whom he "rescued." And today, he and his Catholic pal Martha MacCallum chatted about the issues confronting the next pope which for, Martha and Frank, don't include the systemic and global problem of Church enabled pedophilia. Shhh.....
The happy Martha MacCallum reported that Italian newspapers are speculating that the next pope might be American. She showed photos of the 11 American Cardinals who will be papal electors. She could hardly contain her glee as she said that it was "good to see" her guest, Fr. Frank Pavone, who was equally happy to be talking to her. He said that in the time leading up to the election, there will be lots of speculation about the choice. While a number of the American Cardinals have had some pedophilia issues, that wasn't brought up.
MacCallum tilted her head (always a sign of an impending deep thought) and offered her opinion: "The question is what is the most important thing that the conclave believes we need to have in the next pope. I know that, you know, the rising trend of secularism in the world is of great concern to the Catholic Church and that may be something that's focused on." She then referenced a "sleeper issue which, she thinks, is "persecution against Christians all around the world, sort of global plight of Christianity." (Boo Ya, she managed to work in the patented Fox News meme about persecuted Christians.) She cited the number of "Christians killed, every year, in the name of the faith for the last 10 years" and claimed that it's "unreported and underreported." Pavone agreed that it's major issue and could be weighing heavy on the minds of those who will elect the next pope. He recommended that all the Fox viewers, who are believers, should pray In saying good-by to her BFF Father Pavone, she emphasized that's "it's always a pleasure."
In the happy Catholic land of the "fair & balanced" Fox News, there is no discussion of declining member ship in the Catholic Church which might be related to the Church's views on birth control, homosexuality, women in the priesthood, and, of course, the cover-up of sexual abuse by American priests and bishops. There is no talk of how the modern "Inquisition," after an investigation, is considering disciplining the largest group of American nuns because, according to the Vatican, they are ignoring gay marriage and abortion in favor of social justice issues - an investigation that Pavone supports.
While MacCallum's eyes lit up as she cited "Italian newspapers" that are speculating about an American pope, she didn't mention that "Italian newspapers have been filled with profiles of the cardinals whose presence at the conclave would be an "embarrassment" to the Vatican" including the "papabile" "Cardinal Justin Rigali who retired as archbishop of Philadelphia in disgrace after a grand jury accused him of keeping credibly accused abusers on the job." She didn't mention that a major Italian magazine has run a poll on whether the disgraced Cardinal Mahoney should attend the conclave and the answer was a resounding no. She certainly didn't cite the number of American Catholics who have signed a petition demanding that Mahoney recuse himself.
So the biggest problem for the Catholic Church is worldwide persecution? Is there any question as to why Fox "News" viewers are misinformed?
