Huckabee Echoes The Dog Whistle: Mocks Obama’s “Hip-Hop Pals” At His Birthday Barbecue

Reported by Ellen - August 8, 2011 -

Last week, Fox Nation put up a rather disturbing post mischaracterizing President Obama’s birthday barbecue as a “Hip-Hop BBQ.” Fox News came under a great deal of well-deserved scrutiny for it and defended itself by saying they got the hip-hop reference from a Politico story "which stated 'Also present: Chicago pals, law-school friends, donors--and lots of kids of friends, who stole the show by doing dance routines to the hip-hop songs, in the center of the East Room.'" Last night (8/7/11), Mike Huckabee echoed the same dog whistle by talking about how Obama should “pass one of those great ol’ big hats that one of the hip-hop pals wore” and went on to offer some mock hip-hop-type rhymes.

The complete Fox Nation headline was: Obama’s Hip Hop BBQ Didn’t Create Jobs. Check out how closely Huckabee mimicked that message, albeit with a tad more subtlety.

In what was billed as a “Huckabee Special Credit Crisis” show, Huckabee nonetheless took time out to take this gratuitous, sarcastic slap at the president:

In a week of bleak economic news, President Obama celebrated his 50th birthday with a $35,800-a-plate dinner in Chicago. And then, he blew out the candles on the cake and the walls of the White House with a star-studded bash featuring Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, Tom Hanks and a whole lot of other A-listers from Hollywood.

Look, some commentators have given the president a hard time about such lavish and ostentatious parties at a time when 16 million Americans don’t have jobs. But not me. No, I want to congratulate the president. And not just for his 50th birthday. No, I want to congratulate him for his obvious efforts to really stimulate our sluggish economy. Because now, hopefully, none of the president’s guests flew in private corporate jet to attend these gatherings of the swells… No, I’m sure they all came in electric cars or in high-speed trains and no doubt they ate organic arugula sandwiches and had tofu for dessert.

But you know what? He did create a lot of jobs. Jobs for those who prepared the birthday meal, set up the chairs for the dinner and who carefully polished each of those $35,800 plates since that one plate costs more than the average American makes in a year. Now, I’m glad the president had such a large time with his friends. And, by the way, they think that they all ought to pay more in taxes. So, hopefully, while they were gathered, they passed one of those great ol’ big hats that one of the hip-hop pals wore. So that way everyone could empty their pockets and open their checkbooks. So they can give more to our ever-responsible federal government so the fine folks at the party can bail out our government.

Well, I’m sure that happened. So let’s get back, Jack. Let’s cut the Pres some slack. His birthday gig might just bring our economy back.

So what's Huckabee's excuse?
