The America of America's "fair & balanced" newsroom seems to be a country in which sheer hatred of unauthorized immigrants supersedes any attempt to discuss a possible path to citizenship for those who are contributing to America's economy whist living in the shadows. Given that Fox "News" thrives on fear of the other and an "us vs. them" worldview, it's not surprising that their coverage of immigration issues is slanted towards those who carry pitchforks. Aiding and abetting the nativism, is a group that, if one didn't know their unsavory origins and advocacy, one would assume was mainstream - and that assumption would be wrong because this organization, The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), has been designated, by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), as a "hate group."
Not only has this group appeared on Fox TV to push, among other right wing memes, the one about "anchor babies;" but their Press Secretary/Communications Director has an article on the Fox website in which he debunks claims that President Obama is really addressing immigration and border issues. The group that Bob Dane represents has been designated by the SPLC as a "hate group" because of its anti-Latino and anti-Catholic positions. (Hmm, does Catholic loving Roger Ailes know that?) Its founder is John Tanton who, 20 years ago, warned of a destructive "Latin onslaught" on the US. His journal, which publishes articles by white supremacists, warns of the dangers of multiculturalism - something not too popular in the Fox nation. And while Fox's Glenn Beck spent an entire program devoted to how Planned Parenthood's founder, Margaret Sanger, had eugenics issues, it appears that Tanton has some of his own.
But Rupert Mudoch, in responding to Congresswoman Maxine Waters' criticism of Fox News coverage of immigration issues said that Fox doesn't "take any consistent anti-immigration line." Meanwhile, he provides a supportive platform for an anti-immigrant "hate group." Gotta love "America's Newsroom!"
