Your World With Neil Cavuto Gives A Boost Of Credibility To Arizona’s Rabidly Anti-Immigrant Russell Pearce

Neil Cavuto interviewed Arizona’s anti-immigrant extremist, State Senator Russell Pearce yesterday (5/26/10). Pearce is not only the author of the state’s immigration law passed recently but he has lately set his sights on a new law that would prevent “anchor babies” from getting U.S. citizenship. Unfortunately for Pearce, there’s a little thing called the U.S. Constitution that expressly stipulates “[a]ll persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.” But Cavuto mentioned none of that. He presented Pearce as a reasonable and credible authority on immigration and helpfully let stand without challenge Pearce’s fear-mongering distortions about immigrants and crime. With video.

The topic was the police chiefs gathering in Washington, D.C. to tell Attorney General Eric Holder that the new law will lead to a rise in crime. Russell said he's "More than upset… These are folks going to Washington, D.C to see if they can’t figure out a way to continue not to do their job. They take a sworn oath to enforce the laws of the land… In the last few years, six Phoenix officers have been killed by illegal aliens, six of them critically injured by illegal aliens… These chiefs… all come from… sanctuary cities… who refuse to enforce the law… It's outrageous."

Cavuto made a point of asking about President Obama sending 1,200 troops to the border. Predictably, Pearce was harshly critical. "If they were serious, it would be thousands of troops."

Cavuto took time to agree with Pearce. But Cavuto offered no challenge when Pearce went on to baselessly fear monger about an Arizona crime wave due to illegal immigration.

Pearce said, “Phoenix, number two in the world in kidnappings. A home invasion, carjacking, identity theft capital of the nation... The Maricopa County attorney’s statistics are in violent crimes, on who they’re charging, is two and a half times that of any other demographic.”

“Fair and balanced” Cavuto did not take the time to point out that, as the Center on Juvenile and Criminal Justice reported recently,

While, in past years, Arizona Hispanics were more likely to be arrested for violent, other serious, and minor offenses alike in the past than their population numbers would predict, today their criminal arrest proportions are very close to their proportions of the population.

There’s no immigrant crime wave. Nada. In fact, recent years, law enforcement reports show NON-Hispanic arrests rates have risen much faster in Arizona (despite much slower population growth) than have Hispanic arrest rates.
