Jon Stewart Addresses The Dumbing Down Of Gretchen Carlson

Reported by Priscilla - December 10, 2009 -

Gretchen Carlson isn’t a “dumb blonde;” but she plays one on TV. Tuesday night (December 8th) Jon Stewart did a scathing piece about this apparent cognitive dissonance between the real Gretchen Carlson, who is an honors Stanford grad with post graduate work at Oxford and accomplished violinist, with the Fox & Friends Gretchen Carlson whose intellect is so limited that she has to “google” words which she doesn’t understand. If one didn’t know Carlson’s background, one would think that she’s just an ordinary conservative “mom” who is just trying to make sense of a confusing world. Her academic accomplishments are downplayed – if they’re mentioned at all. Perhaps the fans identify with a simple, homespun Gretchen who, in reality, is a product of an “elitist” academic world – something that Fox and the conservative right wing anathematize (google it Gretchen) at every opportunity. But Stewart, as usual, nails it with the comment, “Baby, Gretchen, come back. You don’t have to stash your IQ in an offshore bank account.” The words from chorus line come to mind – “what I did for love” – which, in Gretchen’s case, is directed towards conservative, Republican ideology and a nice paycheck. So if Carlson is just playing dumb, I guess it’s all good. But if she isn’t , well, …

Stewart’s comment that Fox goes after it’s enemies with “passive aggressive wonderment” so sums up Fox & Friends. He also rips Doocy and company a new one for their smug satisfaction over a poll which didn't quite "add up."
