O'Reilly can compare DailyKos to KKK and Nazis, but Congressman Ellison better watch what he says

Reported by Chrish - July 17, 2007 -

Personally, I find the Hitler and Nazi comparisons being diluted from overuse, but sometimes if the shoe fits.... Today 7/16/07 on The Big Story host John Gibson railed against Congressman Keith Ellison (D-MN) (M) for remotely comparing Bush to Hitler, unaware that hours later colleague Bill O'Reilly was going to air an unapologetic and blunt comparison of liberal bloggers to Nazis and the KKK.

Congressman Ellison, as usual identified as America's first Muslim representative, said this:

"It's almost like the Reichstag fire, kind of reminds me of that. After the Reichstag was burned, they blamed the Communists for it and it put the leader of that country [Hitler] in a position where he could basically have authority to do whatever he wanted."

Later in the speech to Atheists for Human Rights he added
"I'm not saying [Sept. 11] was a [U.S.] plan, or anything like that, because, you know, that's how they put you in the nut-ball box — dismiss you."

Still later in the week he clarified
"Obviously, Usama bin Laden and the hijackers who carried out the murderous events are responsible for 9/11. The question is, however, how do we respond to this tragedy? With fear and rage? Or with courage and reason? I'm for courage and reason. This means that in the aftermath of 9/11, instead of invading Iraq, President Bush should have responded militarily where necessary, but even more so, diplomatically, and with all of our intelligence resources."

For this, Gibson suggests in his My Word segment that Ellison may want to stop speaking in public, or even consider early retirement. He ignored Ellison's clarifications and asserted

"It's OK for Ellison to oppose Bush. Plenty of people do. Fine. Vote for somebody else. But to essentially accuse Bush of planning and executing the 9/11 attacks is not so much a political assault on Bush as an assault on the reason and the judgment of Ellison himself.

Mr. Ellison, you've explained why you don't like George Bush. But you haven't explained why you publicly articulated and endorsed the deranged thinking of the looniest among us. Until you take it back and apologize for dabbling in the craziest of 9/11 conspiracy theories, you truly call into question your fitness to serve in the U.S. Congress."

Ellison clearly acknowledged that he believes OBL and the Saudi hijackers are responsible for the 9/11 attacks: "Obviously, Usama bin Laden and the hijackers who carried out the murderous events are responsible for 9/11." Perhaps Gibson is the one who should quit speaking publicly or consider early retirement, as his basic reading comprehension seems to have failed him.

I do wonder what he'll have to say tomorrow about O'Reilly's blunt assessment of DailyKos:

"This is hate of the worst order. It's like the Ku Klux Klan. It's like the Nazi party. It's no different."

Hmmm. What's that saying, fair and balanced? Or is that just an empty slogan?
