Dean Trashed for Comments on Harris; Hume Not Providing Entire Story - Again

Reported by Janie - July 28, 2006 -

Last night (7/27) during the "Two Minutes of Hate" (AKA "Grapevine") segment on "Special Report with Brit Hume", Hume once again went after his favorite whipping boy, DNC Chair Dr. Howard Dean. Just as he did during the previous night's show, Hume reported on comments made by Dean but failed to provide the quote and the context, so viewers could determine on their own their justification and merit.

Hume attacked, "Howard Dean's harsh criticism of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki wasn't the only strong medicine the Democratic National Committee Chairman dispensed Wednesday. As we've noted, Dean called Maliki an "anti-Semite" for condemning Israel's attacks against Lebanon and went on to call Florida Republican Senate Candidate Katherine Harris a crook, comparing her to Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin.

He also said Republicans can't be trusted to defend America and accused the party of working to eliminate civil rights, and blamed the president for "bankrupting the middle class." The theme of Dean's speech? Ending divisiveness in politics and putting aside partisan differences."

Maybe Dr. Dean was over the line, but the viewers of "Special Report" were not given the option to decide on their own, as Hume refused to include what Dr. Dean actually said about Harris.

According to the Guardian, Dean's actual statement was:

[Nelson is] ``going to beat the pants off Katherine Harris, who didn't understand that it is ethically improper to be the chairman of a campaign and count the votes at the same time. This is not Russia and she is not Stalin.''

If Fox News and Hume are so "fair and balanced", providing the entire story rather than a 30-second snippet leaving out the most pertinent information would be appropriate.
