Fox Says "Superman Returns" is Anti-American

Reported by Melanie - June 30, 2006 -

One of the segments featured on Your World w/Cavuto today (June 30, 2006) was captioned, "Will Anti-American Message in Superman Hurt Box Office?" Substitute host Stuart Varney promoted it several times beforehand using graphics that read, "Superman: Anti-American?"

The segment opened with a clip of the l950's, black-and-white, television-version of Superman in which the announcer said:

...[F]ights a never ending battle for truth, justice and the American way.

With a graphic over his shoulder that read, "'American Way' Cut Out!" and, "Super Battle," Varney began:

Yeah, remember that? Truth, justice and the American way. That's what Superman used to stand for. But, of course, as you just heard, he now stands for, that's right, the American way has been replaced by...

Fox aired a clip of the new movie, "Superman Returns:"

How is this going to affect the stock market? Long-term? Short-term? Politics? Does he still stand for truth, justice, all that stuff?

Back to Varney:

You got that? 'All that stuff.' It's no longer, 'the American way.' It's, 'all that stuff.' And it's no accident. the screenwriters say...

Varney read from an on-screen graphic quoting Dan Harris, the screenwriter for Superman Returns, taken from Movies.com (I couldn't find it):

I don't think 'the American way' means what it meant in l945. He's an alien from Krypton...and he has no papers.

Back to Varney:

That last jab a reference to the immigration battle, of course, So, will this anti-American slant be a form of Kryptonite for the box office?

With that, Varney introduced Molly McClure, identified as a "Film Critic/Producer" (I couldn't find anything on her either, which makes me wonder how much of a "film critic" and "producer" she really is), and she and Varney chewed the fat for a few minutes about the liberal hedonists in Hollywood who threaten Our American Values. (There are people out there who need to get a freakin' life!)
