Is Fox News Trashing Cruise to Spoil His Movie?

Reported by Judy - May 4, 2006

The crew on Fox News' "Dayside" has been beating up on Tom Cruise almost daily for about a week now, but only Thursday (May 4, 2006) did they let slip the real reason for their assault on the actor -- he has a new movie coming out this weekend and it was not made by Fox Studios.

Rupert Murdoch owns both Fox News and the motion picture company. Fox News bends over backwards to promote other Murdoch entities, including the Fox entertainment channel's "American Idol" show and others. So it makes sense that besides promoting other Fox entities, Fox News should use its presence in unsuspecting Americans' homes to poison their attitude toward Fox competitors.

Cruise is starring in "Mission Impossible III," which is being released in U.S. theaters this weekend. If you've heard for a week on "Dayside" that Cruise isn't married to his pregnant girlfriend, has an ultrasound in his home to check on the progress of the developing fetus, and other things that most people don't do, might it affect your willingness to go see the movie?

Murdoch probably thinks so. It's yet another example of how media concentration affects Americans' access to information and their perceptions of the world.
